CLARENDON - Hilda Gray Leonard Williamson, 65, died Wednesday, June 30, 2004 at Duke University Medical Center, Durham.
She is survived by a daughter: Sherry W. Britt of Clarendon; her mother: Ada Butler Singletary of Elizabethtown; a brother: Henry Leonard Jr. of Clarendon; and two grandchildren.
Arrangements are incomplete and will be announced by Worthington Funeral Home of Chadbourn.

LORIS, S.C. - Mayflower Bellamy, 60, of the Bayboro community of Loris, S.C. died Friday, July 2, 2004 at Conway Hospital.
Final rites will be conducted Wednesday, July 7 at 2 p.m. at Mt. Olive Missionary Baptist Church in the Bayboro community of Loris, S.C. with the Rev. Leamon Bellamy giving the eulogy. Interment will be in the Silver Star Cemetery in the Bayboro community. Westside Funeral Home of Tabor City is handling the arrangements.
She is survived by two sons: the Rev. Leamon P. Bellamy of South Carolina and Christopher E. Bellamy of Myrtle Beach, S.C.; a grandson; three sisters: Barbara W. Farmer and Roberta Bellamy, both of Tabor City and Ella Mae Church, Atlanta, Ga.; three brothers: Robert Ward Jr. of Atlanta, Ga., Richard M. Ward of Lawton, Okla. And Dennis Ward of Anchorage, Alaska.
The family will receive visitors at the funeral home from 6-8 p.m. Tuesday, July 6.

CHADBOURN - Agnes Horne Barfield, 84, died Saturday, July 3, 2004 in Shoreland Health Care, Whiteville.
She was the daughter of the late Berry McKenzie and Dallie Hinson Horne and the widow of David Duckery Barfield.
Final rites will be conducted Tuesday, July 6 at 3 p.m. at Worthington Funeral Home by the Rev. Elmore Strickland. Interment will be in Chadbourn Memorial Cemetery. Worthington Funeral Home is handling the arrangements.
She is survived by a daughter: Judy B. Turbeville and husband Bennie of Chadbourn; three sons: Lacy I. Barfield and wife Wanda of Chadbourn, Pearlie C. Barfield and wife Elizabeth of Whiteville and Earnest Joseph Barfield and wife Sandy of Everett, Pa.; four sisters: Ressie H. Gordon of Chadbourn, Eva Woody of Whiteville, Edith -Bet- Clewis of Hollywood, Fla. and Ethel -Essel- Hovde of Normal, Ill; three brothers: Jack Horne of Whiteville, Amos Horne of Greer, S.C. and Forrest Horne of Chadbourn; 12 grandchildren and 22 great-grandchildren.
Pallbearers will be Nathan Moore, Mack Ward, Edward -Pug- Williamson, Harold Ivey, Derrell Hammonds and Phillip Edwards.

WHITEVILLE - Jane C. Lewis, 77, died Friday, July 2, 2004 in Columbus County Hospital.
She was the daughter of the late Robert and Tincie Dole Cannon and the widow of Elbert Lewis.
Final rites were conducted Sunday, July 4 in the Inman Funeral Home Chapel, Tabor City. Inman Funeral Home handled the arrangements.
She is survived by two sons: Ronnie Lewis of the home and Harold Lewis of Whiteville; a daughter: Teresa Campbell of Hickory; four grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.

HALLSBORO - Evangelist Gennis Richard -Jamie- Tedder Sr., 62, died Sunday, July 4, 2004 in Nakina.
He was the son of the late Dennis James Tedder and Ottie Clifton Tedder. He was the owner and operator of Tedder-s Upholstery Shop in Hallsboro and was an evangelist.
Final rites will be conducted Wednesday, July 7 at 3 p.m. at Chadbourn Church of God of Prophecy by the Rev. John McPherson. Interment will be in Flynn Cemetery, Hallsboro. Worthington Funeral Home is handling the arrangements.
He is survived by four daughters: Angie Tedder of Fayetteville, Gina Groover of Georgia, Loriann T. Whaley of Nakina and Melissa Tedder of Myrtle Beach, S.C.; two sons: Gennis Richard -Jamie- Tedder Jr. and Glen Tedder, both of Raeford; four brothers: R.C. Long, Ricky Long, Charles Long and Joe Long, all of Whiteville; two sisters: Millie Faye Long of Whiteville and Faye Bishop of Las Vegas, Nev.; 13 grandchildren, 1 great-grandchild and one great-great-grandchild.

MOZELLE SIMMONS
WHITEVILLE - Mozelle Simmons, 88, died Thursday, July 1, 2004 at Autumn Care of Myrtle Grove.
She was born Dec. 31, 1915 in Columbus County, the daughter of the late Daniel P. and Della Lewis Simmons. She was a member of Trinity Baptist Church.
Final rites were conducted Saturday, July 3 at Trinity Baptist Church by the Rev. Stephen Bailey. Interment was in Peacock-s Columbus Memorial Park. Peacock Funeral Home handled the arrangements.
She is survived by two daughters: Kathryn Poole of Raleigh and Alice -Pat- Long of Wilmington; seven grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren.
Serving as pallbearers were Barry Long, Kevin Long, Gene Poole, Paul Cromer, Paul Hardee and Wayne Simmons. Honorary pallbearers were members of Faithful Followers Sunday School Class.

TABOR CITY - Juanita Stevens Grainger, 76, died Saturday, June 26, 2004 in Loris Community Hospital.
She was born in Columbus County, the daughter of the late Gola Edwards Stevens and Ethel Nobles Stevens. She was the widow of Joe Grainger and was preceded in death by a sister, Margie Buffkin.
Final rites were conducted Monday, June 28 at Inman Funeral Home Chapel. Interment was in Forest Lawn Cemetery. Inman Funeral Home handled the arrangements.
She is survived by two sons: Mitchell Grainger of the home and Kim Grainger of Clarendon; two brothers: Glenwood Stevens of Green Sea, S.C. and Edward Anderson of Loris, S.C.; a sister: Billie McPherson of Clarendon; and a granddaughter: Shay Grainger.

CHADBOURN - Ronald Dean Hayes Sr., 51, died Friday, June 25, 2004.
He was the son of the late Albert Lacy and Lucinda Shepherd Hayes.
Final rites were conducted Sunday, June 27 at Porter Swamp Baptist Church by the Rev. Tim Moore. Interment was in Chadbourn Memorial Cemetery. Worthington Funeral Home handled the arrangements.
He is survived by a son: Ronald Dean Hayes Jr. of Chadbourn; six brothers: Kenneth E. Hayes, Harold Gene Hayes, Tommy L. Hayes, Keith Hayes and F. Daryl Tyree, all of Chadbourn and A.L. Hayes of Cerro Gordo; and two grandchildren.
Pallbearers were Greg Worthington, Larry Bullard, Randy Hayes, Kenny Hayes, Floyd Ray Hayes Jr. and Dwayne Hayes.

She was employed as an aircraft inspector.
Final rites will be conducted Saturday, July 3 at 2 p.m. at Sandy Plain Missionary Baptist Church, Clarkton, by the Rev. Ronald Campbell. Interment will be in the Mitchell Field Cemetery, Clarkton. Peoples Funeral Home is handling the arrangements.
She is survived by her husband, John Taylor; a son: John Taylor Jr. of Middleboro, Mass.; a stepdaughter: Peggy McGill of Durham; two sisters: Eleanor Boyd of Hamden, Conn. and Zelma Head of Durham; and three brothers: James Moore of New Haven, Conn., Shepard Moore Jr. of Ft. Washington, Md. and William Moore of Mt. Clemens, Mich.

He was the son of the late Edgar B. and Ruby Thompson Hammond and was preceded in death by three brothers: Cecil B., Bobby and Roy Hammond. He was a retired truck driver.
Final rites were conducted Wednesday, June 30 at Meares Funeral Home by the Rev. Tim Moore. Interment was in the Porter Swamp Baptist Church Cemetery. Meares Funeral Home of Fair Bluff handled the arrangements.
He is survived by three daughters: Brenda Ricci and her husband Michael, Sheryl Hammond and Rene- Hammond, all of Boston, Mass.; his former wife: Marie Hammond of Boston, Mass.; two brothers: Edgar M. Sunday, June 27, 2004 in the Arm Forces Retirement Home.
He was a retired Master Sergeant with the U.S. Air Force.
Final rites will be conducted Friday, July 2 at 2 p.m. in the Lebanon United Methodist Church by the Reverends George Smith and Karl A. Zorowski. Interment with military honors will be in the Lebanon Cemetery, Whiteville. Interim Funeral Home is handling the arrangements.
He is survived by two sons: George W. Taylor and wife Cheryl of Loris, S.C. and Jesse S. Taylor Jr. of Whiteville; a daughter: Linda Taylor Henry of Las Vegas, Nev.; a sister: Addie Spencer Taylor of Kinston; a grandson: Brent Taylor and wife Kirsten of Aynor, S.C.; a great-grandson: Grayson Charles Taylor of Aynor, S.C.; and several nieces and nephews.

She is survived by four sons: Garry, Jeffery, Reginald and Barnard McCray, all of Chadbourn; five sisters: Geneva Washington and Orbina Frink, both of Chadbourn, Mary Mae Ida McGraw and Carolyn Flowers, both of Brooklyn, N.Y. and Marilyn Shorter of Ellenville, N.Y.; and two brothers: John McCray of Brooklyn, N.Y. and Purcell McCray of Queens, N.Y.

SUPPLY - Judy Holden Sasser, 59, died Monday, June 21, 2004 in the Lower Cape Fear Hospice and LifeCare Center.
Born in Brunswick County on Oct. 20, 1944, she was a daughter of the late Morton and Janie Clemmons Holden. She was a member of the Civietown Volunteer Fire Department Ladies Auxiliary and has held memberships in the Poley Bridge Baptist Church and Oak Grove Baptist Church.
Final rites were conducted Thursday, June 24 in the Oak Grove Baptist Church by the Reverends Tommy Inman and David Stratton. Interment was in Oak Grove Cemetery. Coble Ward-Smith Funeral Service of Supply handled the arrangements.
She is survived by her husband, J.W. Sasser; a son: Jabe Sasser and wife Hollie; two daughters: Judy S. Carroll and husband Stuart, Debbie S. Stanley and husband Jeff; a brother: Lloyd Wayne Rhodes; two sisters: Cathy -Baby- Robinson and Gloria Carlisle; and six grandchildren: Jeffrey Stanley, Jonathan Stanley, Madison Carroll, Kelsey Carroll, Lindsay Carroll and Noell Sasser.

RALEIGH - Malcolm Williams Bordeaux, 82, formerly of Bolton, died Monday, June 28, 2004 at the Raleigh Community Hospital.
He was the son of the late William Dallas Bordeaux and Florence Colleum Bordeaux. He retired with the Atlantic Coast Line Railroad and CSX as a freight agent for 40 years. He served in the U.S. Navy and was a member of the Neuse Baptist Church in Raleigh.
Graveside services were conducted Wednesday, June 30 at Whiteville Memorial Cemetery by the Reverends Dwight Barham and Walter Hayes. McKenzie Mortuary handled the arrangements.
He is survived by his wife, Ida Jane Fore Bordeaux of Raleigh; two sons: Bill Bordeaux of Durham and Brian Bordeaux of Raleigh; two daughters: Mary Matthews of Benson and Martha Thorne of Sanford; a sister: Juanita Cooke of Tabor City; nine grandchildren and one great-grandchild.

She was the daughter of the late Thomas and Mariah Bullard Brown and the widow of Charles Coleman.
Final rites will be conducted Saturday, July 3 at 12 p.m. at Hooper Funeral Chapel, 1415 E 14th Street, Winston-Salem, by Elder John A. Shirden of Whiteville. Interment will be in Piedmont Memorial Gardens, Winston-Salem. Peoples Funeral Home is announcing for the family.

She is survived by her mother: Savader Lewis Powell of Whiteville; her husband: Carlton H. Brown of the home; seven children: Vonda Powell, Jackie Powell, Jermaine Powell and Roshon Powell, all of Port Chester, N.Y., Nicole Cask of London, Ky. and Carlesha and Tiosha Brown of the home.

CHADBOURN - Ira Alexander -Alec- Quick, 75, died Tuesday, June 29, 2004 at Carolinas Hospital System, Florence, S.C.
He was a native of Marlboro County, S.C., the son of the late Henry Charlton and Louise Wallace Quick. He was a retired major with the N.C. National Guard after 24 years of service. He was a former editor of The Dillon Herald in Dillon, S.C. and was the editor of The Columbus County News (News Times) of Chadbourn from 1982 until 1992.
Final rites will be conducted Friday, July 2 at 11 a.m. at Worthington Funeral Home by the Rev. George Quick. Interment will be in the Quick Family Cemetery in Clio, S.C. at 3 p.m. Worthington Funeral Home is handling the arrangements.
He is survived by his wife of 50 years, Betty Collins Quick of the home; two daughters: Cynthia -Cindy- Q. Schneider of Richmond, Ind. and Debra -Debbie- Q. Weathers and husband Lamar of Whiteville; and three grandchildren: Jenna Schneider, Stephen Schneider and Scott Schneider.

She was born March 19, 1922 in Columbus County, the daughter of the late Chauncey Ward and Harriet Isabell Simmons and was the widow of Jessie M. Price. She was a member of New Life Community Church. She is survived by two sons: Donald Price of Nakina and James Price of Whiteville; three daughters: Rosa Benton and Mildred Surles, both of Whiteville and Miriam Byrd of Chadbourn; a half-brother: Richard Sibbett of Spartanburg, S.C.; a half-sister: Patsy Wright of Laurinburg; 10 grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by two brothers: Etheridge Ward and McDaniel Ward.

She was a native of Bladen County, the daughter of the late Richard Brisson and Alice Connor Brisson. She was preceded in death by her first husband, Carlton Ray Skinner; and a son, Robert Skinner, who passed away two days before her death.
She was a retired insurance agent for Investors Heritage Life Insurance Company with more than 35 years of service. She served on the town board of Halifax for 12 years and was a member of Halifax United Methodist Church.
Final rites will be conducted Tuesday, July 20 at 11 a.m. at Massey Funeral Home, Roanoke Rapids, by the Rev. Stan Lewis. She was born March 19, 1922 in Columbus County, the daughter of the late Chauncey Ward and Harriet Isabell Simmons Ward Sibbett and was the widow of Jessie M. Price. She was a member of New Life Community Church. Elizabeth was an avid walker and was a familiar face to motorists who passed by her on her daily jaunts around Whiteville.
Final rites were conducted Sunday, July 11 at New Life Community Church by the Rev. David Kelly. Interment was in Flynn Cemetery. Peacock Funeral Home handled the arrangements.

Born in Cerro Gordo Sept. 22, 1927, she was the daughter of the late Henry Berry and Lannie Mae Nobles Thompson. She graduated from the former East Carolina Teacher-s College and taught school following her graduation in Weldon, Halifax County, Bath High School and later in Hyde County Schools until 1965 when she retired. She served for many years as pianist and organist at Epworth United Methodist in Sladesville.
Final rites were conducted Wednesday, July 13 at the Lupton Family Plot in St. John-s Episcopal Church Cemetery in Sladesville. The Reverends James H. Lupton and Steve Bryan officiated. Bryan Funeral Service of Swan Quarter handled the arrangements.

CHADBOURN - Jimmy -Les- Bridgman, 61, died Sunday, July 4, 2004 at Avera Sacred Heart Hospital in Yankton, S.D.
He was born in Chadbourn May 26, 1943, the son of the late Lester C. Bridgman and Ila Mae and Sam Williamson.
Jimmy grew up in Evergreen and graduated from Evergreen High School. He was employed as a truck driver for Vulcraft Industries in Florence, S.C. until 1973 when he moved to Nebraska to work for Midwest Refrigerated as a driver and dispatcher. While passing through on a trip, he met Mary Lou Schindler. They were married March 15, 1974 in Omaha, Neb. He then was a manager for Continental Express. From 1976-1984, he was a terminal manager and also performed other duties for Herman Brothers and Cryogenics. From 1984 until his death, he and Mary owned and operated a trucking and brokerage business. This past December he got the truck and trailer he always dreamed of so Mary could travel with him. He loved working on his truck and when time permitted, he loved being with his family and friends, going to the beach with his grandson, fishing, boating, watching car races and playing canasta into the wee hours of the morning. While his grandson, Kayden, was visiting him this summer, Jimmy took him on a trip to New York City and Massachusetts while enjoying their special time.
Memorial services were held Tuesday, July 6 at Wintz Funeral Home in Hartington, Neb., officiated by the Rev. Robert Neu and at First Southern Baptist Church in Lavista, Neb. Thursday, July 8, officiated by the Rev. Vernon Williamson. Interment was in Cedardale Cemetery in Papillion, Neb.

He was the son of the late Adrian Malachi Malpass and Carrie Anna Flynn and the widower of Winnie Mae Croom Malpass. He was a faithful member of Cheerful Hope Baptist Church where he served as a deacon. He served in the U.S. Army during WWII in the Normandy invasion.

For 50 years, he was a member of the Proctorville Masonic Lodge #643 AF & AM and was a past deacon and Sunday school teacher for Barnesville Baptist Church.

WHITEVILLE - John Curtis "J.C." Batten of the White Marsh Community went home to be with the Lord Monday, July 26, 2004 at his residence.
He was born Dec. 25, 1917, the son of the late John Wesley Batten and Fannie Worrell Batten. He was preceded in death by his wife, Kathleen Baldwin Batten, exactly seven years ago. He was a lifelong member of White Marsh Baptist Church, where he held various positions including treasurer for 41 years, deacon and Sunday school superintendent.
He was a Staff Sergeant in the U.S. Army during WWII. During his tour of duty as an artillery and special equipment mechanic, he traveled to New Zealand, Australia, Bombay, the Persian Gulf, Iran and the Battle of the Bulge. He completed his tour of duty with honor, pride and love of country.
J.C. Batten loved and lived his life for two entities: God and Family. He lived his life being kind and caring for others - that was his witness.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Kathleen Baldwin Batten. He was also preceded in death by two brothers: William and Graham Batten; and one sister: Nellie Batten.
He is survived by his daughter: Nancy B. Shipman of Whiteville; his son: J. Curtis Batten Jr. and wife Reba of Whiteville; brothers: Carl Batten and Lloyd Batten, both of Whiteville and Paul Batten of Myrtle Beach, S.C.; sisters: Thetus Sessions of Whiteville, Lois Blakely of Pleasant Garden and Retha Carey of Clarkton. He is also survived by four grandchildren: John C. Batten III of Oak Island, Dana S. Malpass and husband Jimmy of Lake Waccamaw, Tonya Batten of Morehead City and Tiffany S. He is survived by his wife, Cecile Sellers Cribb; a son: Ronald Cribb and wife Mary of Rolesville; a daughter: Cynthia Tyrrell and husband Matthew of Raleigh and Charlotte; a brother: Roger Cribb of Clarkton; five sisters: Gertie Nobles of Hope Mills, Marie Cheshire of Wilmington, Jeanette Nobles and Belinda Brown, both of Whiteville, Brenda Thompkins of Lumberton; five grandchildren: Jennifer Hawley, Andy Woodlief, Brandon Cribb, Morgan Kelly and Meredith Kelly; and a great-grandson: Greyson Hawley.
He was preceded in death by two brothers: William K. Cribb and Wadis B. Cribb; and a sister: Myrtie Todd.
The family will receive friends Friday, July 23 from 7-8:30 p.m. at Peacock-s Chapel In The Pines, Whiteville.
