UNKNOWN CEMETERY ON HAL E. SCHENCK'S LAND This cemetery is located in Cleveland County, No. 9 Township on the lands of Hal E. Schenck a half mile west of Lawndale, and being on a knoll and on the west side of First Broad River on the west side of old Lincolnton-Rutherfordton Stage Coach Road and opposite the old home and Road Inn of Henry Schenck, now in the southwest part of Lawndale, and south of the Mary Ann Grigg Branch. Owner of Cemetery: Hal. E. Schenck No marked graves Unmarked graves; 16 In this cemetery there are 16 unmarked graves with evidence of 10 or 12 others. General condition of cemetery: Abandoned, though it is plowed around. Date of survey: Jan. 21, 1939 Worker: A. G. Melton Dr. William Crowder who lived 200 yards northeast of the cemetery on Mary Ann Grigg Branch, died before D. W. T. Grigg (now 78) was born. William Crowder was his son, Dial H. Crowder was his grandson. [Handwritten in are names: are Dow or Dew (might be initials D. O. W. or D. E. W.), Rev. E. N., W. P., Martha Jane, Emma.] Also, Nathaniel Thompson was buried here abut 1865 and was 104 years old. He lived on the north side of Mary Ann or Grigg Creek a half mile up the creek. Also, he had two old maid sisters buried here, named "Ceney", name of one. Then in about 1878 a Mr. Wingate, a young man, was buried here having been bitten by a pilot snake and sided suddenly while at work in a still house in Lucas Ford community. Data by Dr. W. T. Grigg, about 78 years old. The following are some notes from P. Cleveland Gardner, County Historian: "Samuel Thompson, from Mecklenburg County, Va., to Putnam Place at Double Shoals. Samuel Thompson and Nathaniel Thompson were brothers and from Mecklenburg County, Va. Samuel Thompson administered on estate of his father Harmon Thompson in Mecklenburg County, Va.
