UNKNOWN TORY GRAVE This grave is located in No. 9 Township of Cleveland County, N.C. seven miles north of Shelby, N.C. on the west side of Highway No. 18, five hundred yards northwest of Pleasant Grove Baptist Church in an old garden place of the late Mrs. Carry Wellmon Williams, widow of Hugh Williams, now owned by her son, Billie Williams. Above mentioned grave is situated in cultivated field south of present Cotton Gin at Beams Mill. Owner of Cemetery: Billie Williams Approximate number of marked graves; None Before 1914: None After 1914: None Unmarked graves: 1 General condition of cemetery: Isolated in an old garden place now in an open field and covered with a pile of rocks. Information handed down from William Wellmon, a Rev. War soldier and father of said Mrs. Carry Wellmon Williams, who gave this land to his daughter, Mrs. Carry Wellmon Williams, is that a Tory lived here during the Revolutionary War; that a group of Patriots went to his home one night and hanged him to the eaves of his house and killed him. He was buried in the garden near the house, and the grave is still pointed out. This information is given by P. Cleveland Gardner, Cleveland County Historian.
