THOS. WALKER GRAVEYARD This small cemetery is located in Rutherford County, N.C. just across the Cleveland County Line adjoining No. 8 Township, 16 miles west of Shelby and 3 miles west of New House on the land of Laudus E. Jenkins (formerly owned by Misses M. A. & M. J. Walker, popularly known as the "Twin Walker Girls"). It is tow miles south of Hopewell M. E. Church adjoining lands of Mr. Foster Beam, 76, and is within 200 yards (west) of the M. A. & M. J. Walker old home place. Owner of Cemetery: Mr. L. E. Jenkins, Ellenboro, N.C.R.F.D.No. Approximate number of marked graves: 2 Unmarked graves: 7 Earliest marked grave: Thos. Walker, d. 1850 General condition of cemetery: Four large cedars and two mimosa trees stand in the graveyard as a sort of protection. The mounds are still visible with unlettered native rocks still standing. Though it is practically abandoned, yet there are no signs of deliberate destruction. Date of survey: June 26, 1939 Workers: Forest Williams and Anson G. Melton Inscriptions: Walker, Thos. B. 1790 D. 1850 Walker, Susannah, wife of Thos. Walker B. 1795 D. 1874 (Mr. Foster Beam, 76, says that Thos. Walker's wife was a Bostic.) Melton, Columbus (No marker; but Mr. Foster Beam assures us that he (Columbus Melton) was buried in this old Family graveyard. This Columbus Melton is the grandfather of Anson G. Melton, Government worker on The Historical Records Survey of Cleveland County, N.C.) Walker, M. A. or Mary Ann (No Marker) / Walker, M. J. or Martha Jane (No Marker) These "girls" never married, left at their death 160 acres of the best land in the southeastern part of Rutherford County and were buried' on the land they owned and lived upon all their lives. They were held in high esteem and were well known throughout Rutherford and Cleveland Counties. But having made no provision in their will for a marker to their graves, they as yet, have no marker.
