THOMAS GOODE CEMETERY This cemetery is located in No. 8 Township, Cleveland County, N.C. on the lands of Nixon Whisnant about three quarters of a mile southwest of Polkville, N.C., and about a half mile west of Polkville School on highway leading Shelby to Polkville. Being in a pasture and shows no care or attention whatever. It lies on a small elevation 100 x 100 feet; on west side of old Lincolnton-Rutherfordton Stage Coach Road. Owner of Cemetery: Nixon Whisnant Approximate number of marked graves: 1 Before 1914: 1 After 1914: None Unmarked graves: 29 Earliest marked grave: Malinda Goode, d. Nov. 21, 1832 General condition of cemetery: Entirely abandoned-out in a pasture. Peter Ranger, a pauper, was buried here about 65 years ago (1873), according to a report given by Mr. Nixon Whisnant, age 45, who is a resident of this community. Worker, A. G. Melton. Information by Nixon L. Whisnant-he says that Thomas Goode married Martin Elliott's daughter and that he was a pioneer and settled here and was the owner of this land occupied by the cemetery. Also that a number of slaves are buried on the north side of the cemetery. Martin L. Goode, son of Thomas Goode, was born here, was killed by a horse while crossing bridge in Monticello, S.C., shortly after the Civil War, and was brought back in a 4-horse wagon by Jack Finch.
