CLEVELAND COUNTY, NC - CEMETERIES - Shiloh Presbyterian Church Cemetery SHILOH PRESBYTERIAN CHURCH CEMETERY This cemetery ,which is the oldest dated cemetery in the area is located in southeast section of Cleveland County, North Carolina. The cemetery is about one mile east of Grover, North Carolina, and lies about four hundred feet south of the old York Road, now Elm. A few markers in the south end of the cemetery are in Cherokee County, SC. Traveling east from Grover, you will pass a bridge which crosses Highway I-85. At this point, a few feet from the bridge, there is an unpaved road on the south side which leads to the cemetery, which is in a beautiful setting of of Oak, sweetgum, redbud and dogwood trees. This road surrounds the cemetery which is outlined on three sides with a single row of evenly-spaced hickory nut trees. Apparently, these hickory nut trees, which are not native, were set there many years ago. The oldest dated tombstone is that of William Patterson who died on the day of the battle at Kings Mountain, October 7, 1780. The last burial in this cemetery was 1916. Four who were buried here fought in the battle at Kings Mountain Colonel Frederick Hambright, Arthur Patterson Jr.,William and Thomas Patterson. Arthur Jr., William and Thomas Patterson were the sons of Arthur Patterson Sr., a native of Ireland, who was killed during the battle and buried on the hillside near the battlefield. Major Frederick Hambright, son of Col. Frederick Hambright, was an Indian fighter and went on an expedition to Georgia against them. Also, many that were buried here fought in the civil war on the Confederate side to help sustain their cause for the south. A number of graves are marked with large field stones cut from a mountain quarry which was located about three miles southeast from this cemetery. These stones do not have inscriptions, except two which have initials only. We know from early records, Land Grants and War Service Records that many who have markers in this cemetery were Pioneer families and their descendants. With the passing of time they were brought to the grave yard close by Meeting House to sleep under the trees they planted. The list that follows is probably not all that were buried there. With time's passage a few stones have possibly disappeared. Names and dates were copied from all marker found. Information added in Brackets is from family, War Service, and Shiloh Church Records.Much time and careful research were required to copy, checked and rechecked the various records for information stated beyond that inscribed on the tombstones.
