TUCKER OR UNKNOWN CEMETERY Situated in Number 5 Township, Cleveland County, N.C. on farm of Mr. R. Lee Carpenter, and in open field one quarter miles east of Carpenter's residence. This farm was formerly owned by Van Tucker, and is situated about one and one half mile of Buffalo Cotton Mill, and about one mile from Buffalo Baptist Church, and to reach the Carpenter home leave Shelby-Cherryville Highway at Buffalo Cotton Mill, on east side of highway, up by buffalo Baptist Church, turn right at church, thence south less than one mile to Carpenter home. Below present Buffalo Cotton Mill about one half mile is the site of an old corn and wheat mill and cotton gin at one time owned by Jake Hoyle, thence, Henry Cline and his son, Tommie Cline. The old road leading by way of this mill site leaves present highway between home of T. Clarence Gardner and A. V. Dedmon on southeast side, thence down east by present home of Buren Dedmon, thence crossing Buffalo Creek, thence east. This mill was probably operated between 1835 and 1880 or about time buffalo Cotton Mill and present big stone dam were built. On west side of Buffalo Creek one quarter mile at home of Buren Dedmon once stood the home of a Mr. Tucker, an early settler. This Mr. Tucker had two sons who settled near him; one on the south and one on the north. The son who settled on the north side was John M. Tucker, and the old log residence in which he lived is still standing and now used by J. Frank Dedmon for a barn. This John M. Tucker has two sons; one named Lum and one John, both of whom lived to a ripe old age, but have been dead several years. It is though that the cemetery on east side of Buffalo Creek is that of this Tucker family, and in which the grandfather of said Lum and John tucker were buried. Data by P. Cleveland Gardner, this August 1, 1939 Below I quote a footnote from a letter, dated Nov. 21, 1939, from Mr. Gardner: "Mr. Melton: I have found this sheet in my papers, but do not find it recorded in permanent book. This data is important as showing location and settlement of first TUCKER family in county, and I wish you would record it as indicated, under Township 5, page 32." * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * This cemetery is among the many Cleveland cemeteries included on the Cleveland Count WPA Cemeteries CD, copyrighted 2008, by Ann K.
