Philip Davis Cemetery This cemetery is located 1/8 mile north of S.C. State Line, in Rutherford County, N.C., and some 30 yards west of County Line of Rutherford and Cleveland, on present farm of Robert Edney, said farm consisting of 32 acres; six of which are in Cleveland County, and 26 in Rutherford County. Owner of Cemetery: Robert Edney Approximate number of marked graves: 2 Before 1914: 2 After 1914: None Unmarked: 30 Date of survey: Dec. 28, 1938 Name of worker: Anson G. Melton Following data by Mrs. Elizabeth Ruppe, aged 77, who lives ¾ mile east of said graveyard: "Philip Davis had a son named Philip Davis, Jr., buried here; he married a Miss Champion; later he was taken up and buried at Gaffney, S.C. by the side of his wife. Also, that Philip Davis, Sr., above named [now listed below] owned a large number of slaves, and that a number of them are buried in this graveyard." P. Cleveland Gardner, County Historian, says that the surveyors commissioned by Cleveland County in 1845 to establish the new line between Cleveland and Rutherford Counties, in their report refers to dividing line of said counties as beginning at a point on the South Carolina State Line, nearly south ¼ mile of where Widow Davis resides, etc. Earliest marked grave: Philip Davis, d. June 14, 1830. General condition of cemetery: Bad condition; it has been abandoned for many years. Inscriptions: Davis, Philip B. April 25, 1782 D. June 14, 1830 Aged 48 years Davis, ??
