Dickson, Elizabeth Died in the 52nd year of her age [No dates] W. & J. Patterson 1818 ______ Arthur Patterson, Sr., Pioneer Settler, Killed in Battle of Kings Mountain and Buried on Battle Field ______ Arthur Patterson, Sr., settled on King's Creek, 3 ½ miles south of Kings Mountain, N.C., about 1760 on what is known as the Patterson land, still in the family and now owned by Mr. J. M. Patterson, of Kings Mountain, N.C. J. M. Patterson says that Arthur Patterson was killed in the Battle of Kings Mountain and that he was very probably buried there on the Battle Field. He was probably fifty years old, so says Mr. Patterson. Arthur Patterson had five sons-Arthur, Jr., Thomas, William, Robert, and James. The three oldest sons, while out hunting, were captured by Ferguson's men and taken prisoners. But when the battle started they got loose and helped hang some Tories the next day. The Patterson old house still stands on the old plantation, having been built by Arthur Patterson's three oldest sons, namely, Arthur P., Jr., Thomas, and William. The house was built about 1790. An infant daughter of Robert Patterson (unnamed) died in 1814 and was buried on the old Patterson farm 200 yards NW of the old Patterson house. This information was given by Mr. J. M. Patterson. Data by P. Cleveland Gardner: Draper, pp. 302, 312 and 313, relates the story of Arthur Patterson, Sr., and his three sons, Arthur, Jr., Thomas and William. Also, on pp. 290, 343, 344, Draper mentions the "Gallows Oak" of Kings Mountain on which Tories were hanged, both of which are in Cleveland County. Both of these sites should be properly marked. * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * This cemetery is among the many Cleveland cemeteries included on the Cleveland Count WPA Cemeteries CD, copyrighted 2008, by Ann K.
