OLD PISGAH PRESBYTERIAN CHURCH CEMETERY This cemetery is situated just across the county line in Gaston County, NC adjoining Cleveland County, NC, Township No. 4. It is about 3 miles east of the town of Kings Mountain and about ½ mile south of Highway No. 74 overlooking Baker's old mill pond. A large twin oak stands at the northwest corner just outside the wall. The markers appear to be old and no modern markers at all. Owner of Cemetery: Pisgah Presbyterian Church Marked graves: 307 Before 1914: 307 After 1914: [None] Unmarked graves: 50 Earliest marked grave: Jean Blackwood, d. March 11, 1797 Condition: The cemetery is 55 yards square and completely surrounded by a large rock wall about three feet wide and three feet high with a crude homemade iron gate about five feet wide on the south side. The cemetery shows annual attention. Date of survey: May 1, 1939 Worker: Anson G. Melton A Sketch of Old Pisgah Presbyterian Church Old Pisgah Church was formerly situated just across the county line of Gaston County adjoining Cleveland County, Township No. 4, about three miles east of the town of Kings Mountain, N.C., about ½ mile south of Highway No. 74, overlooking Baker's old mill pond. It is in plain view of the Pinnacle highest peak of the Kings Mountain Range. The church was moved to its present site, about two miles further east, in 1855. The pastor now in charge of this church (1939) is the Rev. C. B. Williams of Gastonia, N.C., R.F.D. No. 1. The old cemetery still remains in fair condition, being surrounded by a large rock wall. The wall is composed of rather loosely laid rough stones about three fee high and three feet wide at its base showing great outlay of labor in its construction; and is about 55 yards square. Many interesting people are buried in this cemetery, including several Revolutionary War Soldiers. Through the courtesy of Dr. J. E. Anthony, of Kings Mountain, whose land completely surrounds the old cemetery, we have secured a very instructive clipping from the Gastonia Daily Gazette published November 15, 1938. The article was written by W. F. Marshall. Because of its historical value, we are giving the following from his pen: "The foregoing is prefatory to presenting in this connection an interesting bit of Gastonia County church history that was written upwards of 52 years ago. I chance to run across it here in the State Library early in October and copied it from the Charlotte Home Democrat for September 17, 1886. The article was credited to The Associate Reformed Presbyterian, of Due West, S.C., as having been written by Rev. R. Lathan. This article, remember, was written and published more than a half a century ago, when the county was about 40 years of age and contained about 17,000 people. The article is as follows: " 'In Gaston County, N.C. about four miles east of King's Mountain, on the Air Line Railroad, there once stood as Associate Reformed church. It is not there now. More than thirty years ago the congregation, having concluded that the location was not the most desirable erected a new house of worship about two miles further east. All that remains of the old house are the corner stones on which the sills rested. The graveyard that contains the dust of more than three generations of men is surrounded with a massive stone wall, and the old spring affords an abundant supply of pure mountain water. " 'Old Pisgah graveyard dates back nearly ninety years. The following is the inscription on the oldest headstone: "In memory of Jean Blackwood, who died March 11, 1797, aged 36 years." Jean Blackwood, tradition says, was the first individual buried on the spot. Since that time fully fifteen hundred persons have found a resting place near here. " 'The title to the land on which was built old Pisgah church was made by Alexander Dicky on the 2nd of Feb. 1801. It was signed in the presence of John Kennedy, Jr., John Venables, Robert Adams and Gilbreath Falls. The names of the trustees were James Blackwood, John Falls, James Oates, James Ferguson, Samuel Blackwood, and Thomas Dickson. To these trustees ten acres were sold for the sum of $28.50. The condition upon which it was sold to these trustees for the use of Pisgah congregation is that the congregation adhere firmly to the Westminster Confession of Faith in doctrine, government and discipline. In case of a departure from the Westminster Confession of Faith the property reverts, not to the original owner or his heirs, but to any one adhering to the Westminster Confession of Faith. " 'The history of Pisgah congregation antedates Pisgah graveyard by many years. The first place of worship was near the foot to the mountain on what was the, and, we believe is yet known as the "Ferguson Place". The people who first settled in this region of county came from Pennsylvania, near Gettysburg. They were all Scotch-Irish, who had left Scotland that they might enjoy the privilege of worshiping God in accordance with the teachings of the Scriptures. From Ireland they came or rather fled to America. They had been but a short time in America until they incurred the lasting resentment of the Red Men of the forest. From the savage attacks of the Red Men they fled from Pennsylvania to the hills of Gaston and Cleveland Counties, N.C. The settlement in the region of Pisgah church was begun about the year 1750. It was not, perhaps, until after the close of the Revolutionary War that these early pioneers organized themselves into a church. Pisgah church, of which the greater part of these settlers were members, was at first in connection with the Associate Presbytery of the Carolinas. This connection continued until the summer of 1833. In June, 1841, Rev. R. C. Grier, D.D., was, by the first Presbytory, settled as pastor of Pisgah and Bethany.' " --Anson G. Melton, worker-- Inscriptions: Blackwood, Mary J. B. Sept. 17, 1826 D.
