OLD CITY OF SHELBY or LOVE CEMETERY This cemetery is located in No. 6 Township, Cleveland County, N.C. on south side of Hickory Creek and on north side of hard surfaced road or highway leading from Shelby to Grover, and about 2 ½ miles south of Shelby, N.C. Owner of Cemetery: McMurry Sons of Shelby, N.C. Approximate number of marked graves: None Before 1914: Unknown After 1914: None Unmarked graves; 40 or 50 Earliest marked grave: Unknown General condition of cemetery: Completely eradicated Date of survey: Feb. 21, 1939 Worker: Anson G. Melton This cemetery was started in 1841 and abandoned 15 or 20 years later. Prior to 1925 this cemetery consisted of forty or fifty graves, some with markers, all of which were torn up and destroyed about said date by a tenant farmer named Mr. Barnett. (He died one year later.) This farm is now owned by McMurry Sons. An effort was made to establish a city cemetery here but failed.
