THE OLD BUFFALO BAPTIST CHURCH CEMETERY (S.C.) P. Cleveland Gardner, Cleveland County Historian, says: "Buffalo Baptist Church is situated in Cherokee County, S.C., about ½ mile of the North Carolina State (Cleveland County) line, between Buffalo Creek and First Broad River, and about nine miles South of Shelby, N.C. "Rev. J. D. Bailey, in his history of Antioch Baptist Church, page 5, states that Buffalo Church was organized in 1770. At that time Cherokee County was known as York County, and Cleveland known as Tryon County, and the church drew its members about equally from both states. The State Line at that date was not definitely known or established. Therefore, many of the early settlers of what is now lower Cleveland County were buried there, such as the Blantons, Hamricks, Bridges, Durhams, Camps, Hoppers, Rippys, Wylies, Webbers, Youngs, Quinns, and Ervines. "Col. Abram Irvine, who married Sarah Graham, only child of col. William Graham and wife Sarah Twitty Graham, is buried here. Col. Irvine served as Sheriff of Rutherford County while living on his farm near Buffalo Church in what is now Cleveland County. (See: Griffin's Hist., of Tryon and Rutherford Counties.) "Buffalo Church was to the Baptists of that section what Old Britiany was to the Presbyterians of Rutherford County, as many churches sprung from her, such as Antioch, Providence, Camp's Creek, Zoar, Mt. Sinai, Mount Paron, New Hope, and others. (See Logan's Hist., of Bapt. Church, p. 583.)" (From "History of the Hamrick Generation," by S. C. Jones, we learn that an unknown foreigner was first to be buried in this cemetery in 1787. He killed a squirrel in a tree, the squirrel having lodged, he climbed the tree and fell out and himself was killed. Mr. Jones states that no one ever found out the name of this man. Mr. Jones says this information was given him by Uncle William Gaston, a member of the Buffalo Church. Worker: A. G. Melton) Owner of Cemetery: Buffalo Baptist church (S.C.)
