MARTIN GARNER (GARDNER) CEMETERY This family cemetery is located in No. 9 Township, Cleveland County, N.C. on the lands of H. Dick Spangler [*handwritten correction added to read: A. Dick Spangler] about a quarter of a mile southeast of A. D. Spangler residence of east side of the Shelby-Double Shoals Road in edge of woods and some seven miles northwest of Shelby, NC. April 25, 1824 General condition of cemetery: Apparently abandoned. Date of survey: Not listed. Workers: Forest B. Williams and Anson G. Melton The following data by P. Cleveland Gardner, County Historian: "Martin Gardner, b. Nov. 17, 1793, d. April 25 1824; he was a twin brother of Jerry Gardner. Martin Gardner was a son of the pioneer settle, Thomas Gardner and wife, Ollie Martin. Martin Gardner had 5 brothers, to wit: William, Lewis, Jerry, Dave, and James L., and 6 sisters, to wit: Elizabeth, Rebecca, Leannah Gardner Vaughn, Jane Gardner McCurry, and Carrie Gardner Grigg. "Martin Gardner was married to Nancy Glasco, daughter of Thomas Glasco, Aug. 16, 1821. He left a wife and two children, to wit: 1-Dellcenie Gardner m. 1st James Moss, and m. 2nd Berry Mitcham. [No data on second child.] Following death of Martin Gardner, his widow married Will (Wilts) Martin of Cleveland County; they had four children; and about 1845 they sold said farm and moved to Mississippi. Some nine families left Cleveland County for Mississippi with them, there were: Dave Gardner, Hoyle Gardner, Elliott, London, Falls, et. al. "Mrs. Susan Mitcham Wease, Lawndale, N.C., is a granddaughter of Martin Gardner, and has his old family Bible. "Moss, (infant) of James Moss and wife Dellcenie Gardner. "Gardner (Infant), of Thomas L. Gardner and wife Mary Jane Williams. "William (Buck) Vaughn, a Revolutionary soldier, was buried here, also his son Spencer. Buck Vaughn married a Miss Eliza Perkins, of Mecklenburg County, Va., and they moved to this section in 1803? Spencer Vaughn had these children buried here: Columbus C. Vaughn b. 1838; d. 1859, Perry Vaughn & Alexander young sons. Also Lewis McKey Ledford had a young son named Frank Ledford buried here. Spencer Vaughn born in Mecklenburg Co., Va. 1800 d. May 1878, moved to N.C. with his parents about 1800 along with Hamricks, Hords, Elliiotts & Doggetts. His wife, Liannah Gardner, b. June 25, 1795, d. June 16,1881, buried Pleasant Grove Baptist Church. She was the daughter of Thomas Gardner and wife, Ollie Martin. Inscriptions: Falls, Leonidas B. Jan. 12, 1848 D. Dec. 6, 1853 Falls, William M. B. Nov. 8, 1852 D. May 30, 1853 Moss, Sarah J. D. Nov. 21, 1848 Aged: 7 years and 10 mos. "Harrill 1859" (Inscription on flint rock at grave) "T. H. 1851" (On flint stone at grave) "C. C. V." (On flint rock) Gardner, Martin D. April 25, 1824 in the 31st year of his age. Falls, Rachel E., wife of T. D. Falls D. April 17, 1879 Aged: 61 yrs., and 7 ds. Falls, Thomas D. B. Mar. 4, 1815 D. July 13, 1871 Aged: 56 years, 4 mos., 9 ds. Glassock, Edward [per text; Glascock?] D.
