LONG CREEK PRESBYTERIAN CHURCH CEMETERY Located in Gaston County, N.C. just over the Cleveland County Line, adjoining Township No. 4, four miles north of Kings Mountain, N.C. and 18 miles east of Shelby, N.C. It is in a rolling section and in view of several beautiful scenes of the Kings Mountain Range. It has a massive rock wall at least 3 ½ feet high and 20 inches wide. The gate is modern and swung to two posts 6 ½ feet high. A steel gate. There are nine corner posts about 5 feet high and is in an octagon shape, inclosing about 3 acres. There is a large oak tree on the inside of the rock wall, with a very beautiful crape myrtle at the head of one of the graves. Evergreens are scattered throughout the graveyard. One very interesting thing is the old "upping block" between the church building and cemetery where the fore-mothers mounted their horses. The block consists of three stones similar to steps, making it simple and easy to mount a horse. Owner of Cemetery: Long Creek Presbyterian Church Number of marked graves: 423 Before 1914: 362 After 1914: 60 Unmarked graves: 75 Earliest marked grave: Joseph Blackwood, d. Oct. 22, 1780 Condition: The cemetery has the largest and most impressive rock wall around it we have found in our survey. However, weeds and grass are growing in the cemetery and shows need of attention. Date of survey: May 25, 1939 [Workers: None listed.] ------------------- Dr. J. E. Anthony of Kings Mountain, N.C., has very kindly supplied us with a copy of the Gastonia (N.C.) Daily Gazette, dated Nov. 15, 1938, from which paper we are quoting a part of an article by w. F. Marshall relative to Long Creek Presbyterian Church: "Distant from old Pisgah graveyard about 4 miles there is a flourishing Presbyterian congregation, which from the name of the creek near which it is built, is called Long Creek. As an organization Pisgah is older than Long Creek, but as a place of worship Long Creek, is perhaps older than Pisgah. Long Creek congregation has never changed its place of worship, while Pisgah has made two changes. The first grave dug in Long Creek Graveyard was for Joseph Blackwood, who, according to the record on his gravestone, died Oct. 22, 1780. This was about 17 years before Jean Blackwood was interred in old Pisgah graveyard. The next oldest grave in Long Creek is that of John McGill who died Feb. 26, 1793. At one time Long Creek and Pisgah congregation were one. The place of worship was first on the Ferguson place, and afterward at old Pisgah graveyard." "About one mile in a southerly direction from Long Creek church there is a very remarkable tree. It is a huge white oak. The trunk a few feet above the ground, is more than 30 ft. in circumference, and the limbs extend in all directions from the trunk 50 ft. covering nearly ¼ of an acre. The top of the tree was in some way injured in the latter part of Feb. 1781. On that occasion Lord Cornwallis, when in hot pursuit of General Morgan after the defeat of Tarleton's forces at the battle of Cowpens, tied his horse to this white oak, them a sapling. The horse in some way injured the top of the tree and it sent out boughs which have attained a huge size. At the time Cornwallis tied his horse to the tree it stood at the southwestern corner of the house of Benjamin Ormand. The house is still standing and never until this spring has been without someone living in it. It is still in possession of a descendent of Benjamin Ormand. Long Creek Presbyterian Church, situated 4 miles north of Kings Mountain, N.C., has a frame building painted white about 40 x 60 feet, with old-fashioned green blinds. In front of the church is a rock wall perhaps 4 ft. high. Around the church are to be seen shrubbery and the various kinds of native trees, such as oaks, pines, hickories, etc. The present building is the third to be erected. Rev. Coyt Hunter, of Bessemer city, N.C., resigned as pastor of this church May 28, 1939 on account of ill health, leaving the church pastorless at the present. The church has preaching two Sundays a month. It is reported by Mrs. ____ Ormand that the membership of Long Creek is approximately 75 and Sunday School membership about 60. Mar. J. J. Ormand is the church clerk and Mrs. Sample Hager, superintendent of the Sunday School. Mrs. Wayne Whitesides is president of the women's Auxiliary. The Elders are: James F. Weir, Hillis Ramseur, and Jasper Bridges. Deacons: R. D. Ormand, J. A. Ormand, Wayne Whitesides, and Bob Robinson. By Anson G.
