Date of survey: June 13, 1939 THE LATTIMORE FAMILY IN CLEVELAND COUNTY, N.C. By P. Cleveland Gardner August 12, 1939 Three brothers, John, Daniel and Samuel Lattimore, sailed from Ireland to Philadelphia about the year of 1690. John Lattimore was the youngest of these three brothers and was then a mere boy. Very little is known of Daniel and Samuel Lattimore and their descendants. John Lattimore had red hair and blue eyes. He was married to Miss Isabel Frazier, who had black hair and black eyes. It is not known where or when John Lattimore was married. However, according to family tradition John separated from his two brothers in Philadelphia and settled in Virginia, and it is thought that he probably married in Virginia, where he reared three sons and three daughters, whose names are as follows, to-wit: 1. Capt. John Lattimore, b. 1745, d. March 12, 1821, m. Jamima Stockton. He was born in Virginia, served in Battle of Kings Mountain, immediately following war he settled near Kings Mountain Battle Ground, and several years later settled on Hinton's Creek in Rutherford County, N.C. where he reared a family, and was buried on his own farm. 2. Francis Lattimore, son of John Lattimore and Isabel Frazier, m. Rachel Stockton, sister of Jamima Stockton, settled in Kentucky. 3. Samuel Lattimore, son of John Lattimore and Isabel Frazier, m. Polly Prague Houston, settled in Indiana. 4. Margaret Lattimore, daughter of John Lattimore and Isabel Frazier, m. Newberry Stockton, settled in Kentucky. 5. Sarah Lattimore, daughter of John Lattimore and Isabel Frazier, m. Robert Black, settled in Kentucky. 6. Lettie Lattimore, daughter of John Lattimore and Isabel Frazier, died when young, single. All of these six children had red hair and blue eyes except Sarah, who had black eyes and black hair. CAPTAIN JOHN LATTIMORE, as above stated, was b. 1745 in Virginia, and d. Mar. 12, 1821 and buried on his farm in Number 8 Township, Cleveland County, N.C. He was a son of the pioneer, John Lattimore who sailed from Ireland to Philadelphia in 1690, finally settling in Virginia. Captain John Lattimore was married to Jamima Stockton and they had three children, to-wit: (John) Daniel, John (known as Red Headed John), and Rachel. Following is a sketch of the three children of Captain John Lattimore and wife, Jamima Stockton: I. DANIEL LATTIMORE, known as John Daniel Lattimore, b. 1775, d. 1883 and buried in Lattimore Graveyard; he was married to Sarah Carpenter and they had nine children as follows: (1) Catherine Lattimore m. Packard (Lee & John Z. their sons) (e) Little Johnie Lattimore m. Nancy Gold. (Sister of Dr. Griffin) (f) Jim Lattimore m. Jane Strowd. (g) Sam Lattimore m. Mary Gidney. NOTE: The above nine brothers, Wm., Joe C., Dan, Little Johnie, Jim, Sam, Frank, tom and Capt. A. M. (Edley) all served as soldier in the Civil War at the same time. The town of Lattimore was named for Jim and Capt. A. M. (Edley) Lattimore, both of whom settled where the town is now located, etc. (9) Jamima Lattimore m. Pink McEntire. II. JOHN LATTIMORE, known as Red Headed John Lattimore, was a son of Captain John Lattimore and wife, Jamima Stockton. This John Lattimore was married to Susan Carpenter. It is also stated that his brother, Daniel Lattimore, was married to Sarah Carpenter, but the relationship of Susan Carpenter and Sarah Carpenter is not given. Following the death of Capt. John Lattimore on March 12, 1821, his widow, Jamima Stockton Lattimore and this son, John Lattimore and his wife, Susan Carpenter Lattimore, and his sister, Rachel Lattimore who married John Hoyle, moved from Rutherford County (now Cleveland County), N.C. to Telico Plains, Tennessee, at which place they left many descendants. III. RACHEL LATTIMORE, daughter of Captain John Lattimore and wife, Jamima Stockton; she was married to John Hoyle; following the death of her father on March the 12, 1821, she in company with her husband, mother and brother, John and his wife, Susan Carpenter Lattimore, left Rutherford County (now Cleveland County), N.C. and settled at Telico Plains, Tennessee, where they left numerous descendants who have become worth and useful citizens. NOTE: Capt. John Lattimore was severely wounded in the Battle of Kings Mountain, and it is said that by reason of this wound he carried a British bullet in his leg to his grave. His family were Methodist and founded Mount harmony Methodist Church, then known as the Lattimore Meeting House, which church en endowed with thirty acres of land which is still held by the church., All these early members of the Lattimore family moved to Tennessee with the exception of the above named Daniel Lattimore, who remained here and joined the Baptist church. Consequently, all members of the Lattimore family now residing in Cleveland County descended as follows: First: JOHN LATTIMORE, who sailed from Ireland to Philadelphia, thence settled in Virginia, where he married Isabel Frazier, and reared SIX children, all of whom went West except one son named, Capt. John Lattimore. Second: Captain John Lattimore and wife, Jamima Stockton, who settled on Hinton's Creek in what is now Cleveland County, N.C. and had THREE children, Daniel, John and Rachel. John and Rachel moved West, leaving Daniel at old home place. Third: Daniel Lattimore and wife, Sarah Carpenter; he was born 1775 and died 1833. He obeyed the Biblical injunction in good measure in that he reared NINE splendid sons and daughters, all of whom followed the example of their father and became worthy and useful citizens, and today rank as one of the most numerous families in Cleveland County, all of whom may trace their name directly through Daniel Lattimore as above indicated. Captain John Lattimore Cemetery: In office of Register of Deeds of Cleveland County, N.C., Book 4-C, page 309, we find a deed of conveyance for this old graveyard, as follows: "Sam c. Lattimore and wife Mary E. Lattimore to Frank Lattimore, son of John Daniel Lattimore, Trustee for Lattimore Burying Ground Association and his successors, a tract of land containing nine-tenths acres, more or less, which includes present old family cemetery of Captain John Lattimore. This deed is dated April 20, 1932 [per text ??], and consideration therein named is One dollar and other valuable consideration. Dr. Everett B. Lattimore, Shelby, N.C., has an historical sketch of Captain John Lattimore which states that he originally settled at or near the Kings Mountain Battle Ground about the site of the Col. Frederick Hambright old home place, where Lattimore lived for several years and then purchased land and settled on Hinton's Creek in Rutherford County, N.C., now Cleveland County. United States Census of 1790: The first U.S. Census, which was taken in 1790, for North Carolina, shows several Lattimore families in North Carolina, to wit: Samuel Lattimore of Chowan County, N.C., Edenton. Capt. John Lattimore, Rutherford County, N.C., having seven slaves, and two sons under 16 years. Daniel Lattimore, Rutherford County, N.C., having four daughters and two sons. Frank Lattimore, Rutherford County, N.C., having five slaves, and five daughters. These represent and include all the Lattimore families listed in the First U.S. Census (1790) of North Carolina. ---------- Inscriptions: Lattimore, Sarah D.
