JOHN CRENSHAW ELLIOTT CEMETERY This cemetery is located in No. 8 Township, Cleveland County, N.C. one mile west of Polkville and eleven miles west of Shelby, and is in a triangular shape on a rolling hillside covered with pine, cedar and locust trees and one large poplar. It is bounded on the west by lands of Plato Elliott, on the north by the lands of Mrs. Coleman Elliott, on the south by lands of Plato Elliott and Mrs. Coleman Elliott, and on the east by Mrs. Coleman Elliott. Services are held at Polkville Methodist Church annually, on which day the Elliott Cemetery is beautifully decorated. John Crenshaw Elliott lived adjoining this cemetery, and was buried in his garden, which was the beginning of said graveyard. Owner of Cemetery: Permanent reservation. Sept. 8, 1827 General condition of cemetery: It is a nice cemetery and I understand it is decorated annually. The markers here are far beyond he average family graveyard. Date of survey: Jan. 9, 1939 Worker: A. G. Melton John Crenshaw Elliott was a son of Martin Elliott; Martin Elliott was a soldier in the Revolutionary War; moved from Mecklenburg County, Virginia to Rutherford County, NC. In 1802, settled between First Broad River and Brushy Creek, south of Dover Mill, and now known as Cleveland County. He was buried there, and a Government Marker is erected at his grave in a few yards of his old home site. Martin Elliott was the progenitor of the Elliott family in Cleveland County, N.C. Data by P.
