IVEY HILL COLORED METHODIST CHURCH CEMETERY This cemetery is located in Cleveland County, N.C. in Township No. 11 one mile east of road leading from Casar to Rutherford County line, on lands of Rob. Wilson, and near an old sawmill place. It is near the home of Mr. T. D. White Owner of Cemetery: Rob. Wilson Approximate number of marked graves: 2 Unmarked graves: 25 Earliest marked grave: Manuel Hunt, d, June 28, 1910 General condition of cemetery: Abandoned completely. It is out in the woods, apparently virgin forest. One of the markers was broken down, the pieces of which could not be located. The other marker was broken in five pieces, but could be reassembled and read distinctly. Glen White, son of T. D. White, helped the workers located this isolated cemetery. There were approximately 25 or 30 unmarked graves. This old church has been abandoned. It is now a dilapidated affair out on a rough hillside in timber. The sills are still there; almost rotten. The rafters have fallen down upon the sills. The church, as far as the workers could learn, disbanded a number of years ago and is no longer in existence. Apparently, the church house was about 24 x 20 feet and built of logs from the nearby forest. The pillows were of native stone. Data by Forest Williams and Anson G. Melton Date of survey: Nov. 1, 1939 Workers: Forest Williams and Anson G. Melton Inscriptions: Hunt, Manuel D. June 28, 1910 Aged: 75 years (This marker, apparently new, has been broken down by rude boys of this community. It was broken in five pieces. After we had located the different pieces and placing them back together, we could read the inscription clearly. Mr. T. D. White said that Manuel Hunt was well thought of by the white people of the community. Workers: Forest Williams and Anson G. Melton.) Another new marker had been broken down, the pieces removed. We failed to locate them. But the base of the marker showed that it was a modern slab and appeared to be the marker of Manuel Hunt's wife, inasmuch as it was by his side. Mr. T. D. White, well known farmer of this section, said Walt Hunt, who was killed by a half-white Negro, was buried here. * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * This cemetery is among the many Cleveland cemeteries included on the Cleveland Count WPA Cemeteries CD, copyrighted 2008, by Ann K.
