COL. P. T. GRIGG & DR. O. P. GARDNER CEMETERY This family cemetery is located in No. 9 Township, Cleveland County, N.C. on a very high and commanding hill overlooking the town of Lawndale and Piedmont High School, just about 150 yards east of Walter Lee's residence. Also being approximately 250 yards NW of the Lawndale bridge spanning the First Broad River. The location of the cemetery is very beautiful, high and impressive. It is about fifty feet square, in a field with one large poplar tree on the western side thereof, and small oaks, shrubbery and grasses thereon. (Information by Dr. W. T. Grigg, aged 76 years and son of Spencer Grigg and great grandson of Jessie Grigg who came from England: In addition to above listed markers the following persons are buried here-John Grigg, died single, aged 17 years; Lem Williams and Celia Williams, children of Mrs. Ellen Grigg Williams; and _____ Williams [husband who died in Civil War] were buried here.) Data by P. Cleveland Gardner, County Historian: Roxanah A. D. Gardner was the first wife of Dr. Oliver P. Gardner, by which marriage two children reached aged of maturity that is, Jasper Gardner who died in Texas, and Miss Hessie who became the second wife of Jessie J. McCurry of Shelby. Dr. Gardner's second wife was Miss Margaret Young, daughter of James Young, by which he had a number of children including Gov. O. Max Gardner, Mrs. Bessie Gardner Hoey (wife of Gov. Clyde R. Hoey), and Col. Junius T. Gardner, and others. Roxanah A. D. Gardner (Grigg) and Dr. O. P. Gardner were married Sept. 3, 1852. Her father was Col. Paschal Threat Grigg and her mother was Nancy Elliott, a daughter of Martin Elliott who was a Revolutionary War soldier in Virginia, and settled near what is now the Dover Mill just west of Shelby. Co. Grigg was married the second time to Miss Carrie Gardner, sister of William Gardner, and a daughter of Pioneer settler Thomas Gardner and wife of Ollie Martin. Col. Grigg and his second wife had no children. Col. Grigg was a son of Fredrick Grigg and wife Sallie Crowder; Fredrick Grigg was a son of Jessie Anderson Grigg. Brothers and sisters of Col. Grigg were: Berry Grigg, Spencer Grigg (Dec. 24, 1811), Hilliard Grigg, Jack Goode Grigg, Nancy Grigg, Sussie Grigg, Tildsa and Roxanna Grigg. Dr. Oliver P. Gardner was the second child of William Gardner and wife, Miss Rebecca Beam, a daughter of Martin Beam; William Gardner was a son of Pioneer settler Thomas Gardner and wife, Ollie Martin; William Gardner had eleven brothers and sisters, as follows: Lewis Gardner m. Polly Kendrick; Jerry and Martin Gardner were twin brothers, Jerry m. Jane Alexander; Martin Gardner m. Nancy Glasco; Dave Gardner m. Miss ____ Carpenter; Elizabeth Gardner died single; Rebecca Gardner died single; Leanna Gardner m. Simeon McCurry; Carrie Gardner m. Col. Paschal Threat Grigg; and James Gardner m. Elvira Cornwell. William Gardner and wife had ten children, as follows: Oliver Jane Gardner d. single; Dr. Oliver P. Gardner 1st m. Roxanna Grigg, and 2nd m. Margaret Young; Mary Ester Gardner m. Christy Gold Martin; Margaret Gardner m. Jacob C. Williams; Thomas S. Gardner (my grandfather) m. Mary Jane Williams; Harriett Gardner m. 1st Jeff Petty, and 2nd James Bostic; Tyler Gardner, single and was killed in the Civil War, Co. I, 38th Regiment (Int.) (Also, Thomas S. Gardner was killed in same Co.); Sarah Gardner m. Columbus Peeler; Nancy Gardner m. 1st Dan Crowder, and 2nd m. James Weaver (no children); and Elizabeth Gardner died at age about 16 months.
