Melton Double Springs Baptist Church is located in Cleveland County, N.C. in No. 7 Township about eight miles northwest of Shelby, N.C., two miles northwest of Lattimore near Washburn's Switch, and by the side of a flourishing spring, being the fountain head of a branch of Brushy Creek. This church, according to Logan's History of the Broad River and Kings Mountain Baptist Association's page ___, was constituted in the year 1845, being the outcome of a revival meeting conducted "at a stand" by the following ministers: L. McCurry, Drury Dobbins, Josiah Durham, and L. D. Crowder. A presbytery for the purpose of organizing this church consisted of "Elders D. Dobblins [per text], L. McCurry and others." W. C. Covington was appointed a delegate to the Broad River Association to ask admission to that body, and it was admitted the same year of its organization, 1845. At its organization it had 33 charter members. Later Double Springs Baptist Church (in 1851) became of the Kings Mountain Baptist Association; furthermore, this church was the distinction of being the birthplace of the Kings Mountain Baptist Association in the year 1851. The first pastor was the Rev. Lewis McCurry. He was succeeded by the Rev. W. B. Padgett. Wm. Covington, M. Gold, and Thomas Wilson were the first deacons. The first clerk was Wm. M. Gold. A beautiful two-story brick church has taken the place of other buildings, with an auditorium containing 317 opera seats and an elevated choir with 23 seats. The church is equipped with 18 large Sunday School rooms. It is heated with hot air and lighted with electricity. The windows are of opaque glass. There are four large columns in front and seven steps about twelve feet long. Around this old church is an impressive mass of modern shrubbery. There are 23 magnolias and 5 large oaks. By actual count there are 32 beautiful evergreen shrubs, 16 on either side of the walk approaching the front, besides countless other cedar-like evergreens. According to the last Sunday School report, the Sunday School enrollment was 159, with 169 present, and an offering of $8.05. ---Anson G. Melton, worker --- Inscriptions: Green, Infant of T. J.
