CARPENTER CEMETERY This cemetery is located in Cleveland County, N.C. in No. 9 Township 2 and a half miles east of Fallston, N.C. on lands of Ray Wilson on a hillside out in a field about 300 yards east of Buffalo Creek and about 300 yards south of the old Carpenter home (200 years old) recently razed by Mr. Ray Wilson, a part of the old lumber being used in a new tenant house. Pictures of this old house are to be found in the Daily Star Office. Owner of Cemetery: Ray Wilson Approximate number of marked graves: 26 Unmarked graves: 20 Earliest marked grave: Susannah Carpenter, d. July 17, 1826 General condition of cemetery: Out in a field and in fair condition. Ray Wilson says that the cemetery is cleaned off every year. Date of survey: Oct. 17, 1939 Workers: Forest Williams and Anson G. Melton (Mr. Ray Wilson quit his work in a nearby field and came to us and helped us read the inscriptions, offering valuable suggestions in regard to the old cemetery and surrounding community.) Mr. Ray Wilson reports that this cemetery on the old Carpenter plantation originally consisted of 3,000 acres. He mentioned the fact that the old Carpenter house (200 years old) had been occupied at the time of its existence except two years, and that only three Negro families had every lived in it. Mr. Wilson explained that Jacob Carpenter was one of the original settlers and owners of this land, and that later it was owned by Presley Brown, thence by himself. Furthermore, Ray Wilson says that it is traditionally reported that there is an Indian Graveyard about 200 yards northeast of the said old Carpenter house place. Moreover, Mr. Wilson says that there are four Indian graves on the west bank of Buffalo Creek opposite this cemetery. The Old Indian Mound This Indian Mound on Ray Wilson's land, originally the Carpenter land, is on the east side of Buffalo Creek between the Carpenter Cemetery and said creek. This Mound, says Mr. Wilson, is 150 yards in length and 50 yards wide. Right on top of the Mound is a solid rock. The Mound appears to be altogether top-soil and produces luxurious corn on top of it, giving evidence that it was actually built by the Indians-and not a product of nature. The Mound's elevation is about 35 feet. It is now covered with broom sedge and is in a pasture. The are no trees growing on the Mound. Tradition has it, among the old settlers that this Mound was built by the Indians upon which to dance. Data by Anson G. Melton Inscriptions: White, Naoma B. Feb. 14, 1835 D.
