BRITTAIN PRESBYTERIAN CHURCH CEMETERY This very large church cemetery is situated in Rutherford County, NC about seven miles west of Rutherfordton, N.C. on the east side of Highway No. 181 and about 200 yards from the road. The church was organized in 1768. The present building was built in 1854. Mr. J. A. Long says that a new building will soon be erected. Owner of Cemetery: Brittain Presbyterian Church Approximate number of marked graves: 351 Unmarked graves: 450 Earliest marked grave: Lieut. Thomas McCollough, d. Oct. 7, 1780 General condition of cemetery: The cemetery is one of the largest rural cemeteries I ever saw, covering perhaps five acres of land. There is no telling how many person are buried here. Part of it is grown up in broom sedge. There are several nice modern markers here. Date of survey: Dec. 4, 1939 Workers: Forest Williams and Anson B. Melton (Mr. J. A. Long who lives in sight of the church says this church was first call "Little Brittain; and that it was organized in 1768. Mr. Long points out that a new church building is underway. He says the present building was erected in1854. Mr. Long said that Lieut. Thomas McCollough, who is buried in this cemetery, was a native of Virginia; and that he was wounded in the Battle of Kings Mountain and brought back to Cane Creek where he died at the Old Brick Fort where they brought the Revolutionists. Mr. Long explained that Ferguson's men had a mustering ground at a place called Gilbert Town (now Gilkey) abut six miles west of this cemetery. The Tories camped there a few days and then marched down Cane Creek. Mr. Long, referred to above, is about 81 years of age and lives on Highway No. 181 about seven miles east of Rutherfordton, N.C. and on a rural route from Rutherfordton. Data by Forest B.
