SOUTHERN LOYALISTS IN THE CIVIL WAR

SOUTHERN CLAIMS COMMISSION

The following names are those listed for Chatham Co., N.C. in the above book by Gary B. Mills.
It is a marvelous compilation, Containing 666 pages, indexed Alphabetically, by surname.
(AND YES, I PULLED THE NAMES OUT FROM ALL 666 PAGES BY, COUNTY)
Every person who presented a claim to the U.S. Government, after the War Between the States, is listed in it. The claims begin in 1871.
22,298 cases were filed by individuals, family groups, churches & businesses. The case files contain affidavits, family information, military records, letters, bible records, wills, etc.
This book is an important resource if you have Unionist ancestors. (Even if you don't, some Confederated filed, under the assumption that the government owed them money, when reconstruction destroyed their livelihood and homes.
Genealogical Publishing Company, 1001 N. Calvert St., Baltimore MD, 21202
is the publisher. I believe I paid about $45.00 for my copy.

To send for data within the book, according to Mr. Mills -

1.  Identify the claimant and copy all the given data I will list here.
2.  If the claim is listed as "A" -(Allowed) then, you should direct your request to: Civil Reference Branch (NNRC) National Archives- 8th & Pennsylvania, NW, Washington, DC, 20408

OR

2. If the claim is listed as "B" (Barred) or "D" (Disallowed) You will need to send for the NARA Pamphlet, on microfiche M1407, intitled: "Barred and Disallowed Case Files of the Southern Claims Commission, 1871-1880. This fiche is free and will give you the exact fiche numbers you will need to order the files. The address for the NARA pamphlet is: Publication Services Branch, National Archives Building, 8th & Pennsylvania, NW, Washington, DC 20408

3. If the footnotes indicate that the case file is missing or did not appear in the Court of Claims Records, then contact me and I will tell you what you need to do then.

Code: A -Allowed means that the goods destroyed, were officially contracted for, by U.S.
B- Barred- The book doesn't say but, I think it meant a Confederate applied.
D- Disallowed means that goods were destroyed but, it was of, military necessity.
DM- Dismissed- No claim proved ?

You will notice that, not many claims were allowed !!
There are many other names that I recognize as Chatham names in the index but, it looks as if the families have moved to another county. I even recognize migration patterns from some of the names and the states they appear in. So, if you have someone here that is yours, let me know and I can tell you what county and state the surname appears in, other than Chatham.
