Justices of the Peace and Ministers Performing Marriages, in

Chatham Co. NC 1851 - 1879

I've decided to transcribe these names because this is the time just before the 'un'Civil War and perhaps this might be the only place you can find your ancestor, if they were not in the 1850 census. Especially if he was killed in the war or moved away from Chatham after this. Many of the men in Chatham moved away about this time period.

Source: Marriage Register Book of Chatham Co. beginning with Marriage Bk. # 1, pg. 4 Remember this is just before the Marriage BONDS went out of usage. And, the marriage licenses were beginning to be used.. (1858) So, some of these men, were J.P.'s before but, are on the bonds, not this register.

The dates are the first date they appear in the Register. I've given the J.P's first, the Ministers. below

From this point on, the Register gives the bride and grooms names, places of residence, who married them,, whether he was a J.P. or Minister, and the witnesses and place of marriage.
