COUNTY FORMATION MAPS

North Carolina in 1768

This is what the county boundaries of North Carolina were, in 1768.  Chatham County had not yet been created.  Chatham's parent county, Orange County, was very large at that time. This map shows that Tryon County had just been cut from Mecklenburg County.

This map shows Chatham County as it was first created in 1770 from Orange County.  Parts of Guilford and Wake Counties also came from the original Orange County.

This map shows Chatham County in 1897 after Alamance County was formed, taking part of the original Chatham County.

This map shows Chatham County in 1907 after Lee County was cut from it.  This is the shape of Chatham County today.
