CHATHAM COUNTY TAX LIST FOR 1815
©2002- Sue Ashby
NOTE: THIS IS THE ONLY  COMPLETE, 'EARLY'  TAX LIST.
The men who are only listed, as a 'white poll' are probably, young men, without any land and "possibly",
still living at home.
It is my understanding, according to N.C. law, men had to be counted as a 'poll' when they became 21 years of age and exempted at age 50, (at this period of time.)  If there is acreage and there is no poll then, you may be sure that the man is exempted for being over age or physically impaired.

Also, even though these lists are alphabetical, by surname, some of them have names added on, out of order, at the bottom of the list. So, either do a 'find' in page or go to the bottom to double check your names. Some taxes were paid "for" others and sometimes a name will be listed as paid "by". So, read carefully! Each list is different!
