Margaret HERMAN was born on 13 July 1924 in Catawba County, North Carolina.1749 She died after a courageous battle with ALS (Lou Gehrig’s Disease) on 11 June 2004 at the age of 79 in Pallative Care & Hospice of Catawba Valley, Newton, North Carolina. She was buried in Mount Zion Lutheran Church Cemetery, Conover, North Carolina. Her obituary appeared as follows: HICKORY - Margaret Herman Laney, 79, of Hickory, died Friday, June 11, 2004, at Palliative Care Center and Hospice of Catawba County. She fought a courageous battle with ALS (Lou Gehrig’s Disease) Born July 13, 1924, in Catawba County, she was the daughter of the late Kirby L. and Claudia Miller Herman. She was a lifelong member of Mount Zion Lutheran Church in Conover. She retired after many years in the hosiery and furniture industries. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband of 59 years, Ward Laney; five brothers, Ruel Herman, Leonard Herman, Hugh Herman, Fred Herman and Paul Herman; and three sisters, Lucille H. Huffman, Pauline H. Hoke and Helen H. Abernethy. Survivors include two daughters, Brenda Laney of Newton and Kathy Laney of Hickory; three sisters and brothers-in-law, Neva H. Flowers, Ruby H. and Joe Abernathy and Frances H. and Henry Anderson of Hickory; two brothers and sisters-in-law, Jim and Sue Herman and Phil and Jean Herman of Hickory and Charlotte Laney of Icard; a brother and sister-in-law, Reid and Mable Laney of Burlington; and a numerous nieces and nephews and their families; four special friends, Patti, Brad, Taylor, and Trevor Brown of Hickory; and a special little friend, Peyton Ramseur of Hickory. The funeral service will be conducted at 1:30 p.m. Sunday, June 13, 2004, at Mount Zion Lutheran Church. The Rev. Harold Drum will officiate and burial will follow in the church cemetery. The family will receive friends from 7 to 8:30 tonight in the Mount Zion Lutheran Church Fellowship Hall in Conover. Pallbearers will be Tim Abernethy, Ty Drum, John Hicks, Brad Brown, Mike Laney, and Wilson Laney. Honorary pallbearers are members of Women’s Bible Class at Mt. Zion and her caregivers Brenda Hildebran, Crystal Denny, Sabrina Whittington and Brandy Cline. Margaret HERMAN and Ward D. LANEY were married on 24 October 1942.1749 Ward D. LANEY, son of Ivey Osborne LANEY and Ethel Pearl CLINE, was born on 22 March 1919 in North Carolina.1749 He died on 13 February 2001 at the age of 81 in Hickory, Catawba County, North Carolina.
