The Shuford Family Cemetery:
A Preservation Challenge

The remarkable Shuford family, arriving in America in 1733, aboard the ship Richard and Elizabeth, had a major impact in the land they settled. Merchants, judges, war heroes and respectable citizens, the mark they made in Western North Carolina exists today.

The land they settled in Catawba County was once known as Rowan, Burke and Lincoln Counties. When the Shuford settlement was first made, the threat of Indian attack was a reality.
Their stone homes were built with cellar tunnels to escape the attacks.

The family cemetery was finally dedicated in the 1930's. The stone-enclosed cemetery and was dedicated with a bronze plaque. Time and vegetation sought to overwhelm this sacred plot.

In 2001, the cemetery looked like this:

In 2005, just four short years later, the cemetery looked like this:

This is the original plaque placed in the 1930's.

The front of the cemetery, with the plaque. Stones atop the memorial have been placed there to keep them from loss .

Earl McAlister, SAR member and descendant of John
Shuford seeks help in preserving the cemetery.

Earl contemplates what a thorough restoration
project might do for this neglected heritage site.

Trees and brush have completely taken over the cemetery.

The cemetery wall looks more like a fort than a retaining wall.

We are currently seeking a sponsor willing to assume responsibility to clean and restore this valuable historic site. In the past, Boy Scout Troops have answered the call, stepping forward to help all citizens preserved their heritage. One such example is the historic Wilson-Robinson Cemetery in Startown. That project was headed by John Jay Cline, Scoutmaster of Troop 903 of Newton, North Carolina.
