20. Moritz (Mauritius) KLEIN {F2.9}11 was born on 18 Jul 1684 likely in Postorff, Alsace.12,13,14 He emigrated on 15 Sep 1749 from Rotterdam, via Cowes, to Philadelphia. A Passenger list and note of the arrival of the ship Phoenix arriving in the port of Philadelphia PA. on 15 Sep 1749. Among the passengers was: "Moritz Klein, Jacob (X) Klein." [List 133 C S&H] At the Court House at Philadelphia, Friday, the 15th Septr. 1749. Present: Joshua Maddox, Esquire The foriegners whose names are underwritten, imported in the ship Phoenix, John Mason, Master, from Rotterdam, but last from Cowes in England, did this day take the usual qualifications to the government. "By the list 261. 550 whole Freights from Zweybrech, Nassau, Wurttenberg, and Palatinate".

Mauritius (Moritz) Klein of Postorff, Alsace married Anna Catharina Martzloff on 19 October 170615 , as recorded in the Hirschland church records. The record notes that Moritz is the son of Sebastian Klein of Steinsal and that Anna Catharina is the daughter of Joh Theobald and Barbara Martzloff of Postorff. These same church records contain the baptism dates and sponsors for each of their 11 children. Additional information is in the Hirschland church records, such as confirmation dates and marriage and death events. Moritz died in Lincoln County, North Carolina.

Anna Catherina MARZLOFF (daughter of Johann Theobald MARZLOFF) was born in 1690, probaby in Postorff, Alsace.12 They had the following children:

Johann Bernard [Klein] CLINE {1.1} was baptized 20 Nov 170713,16,17 sponsors being Johann Sebastian Schaffer (?) and Maria Barbara Schafhern (?) of Hirschland. Church record states he goes "to America;" marries 23 Feb 1734 to Anna Elizabetha Ludman Bieber, widow of Christophe Bieber. (ALS1, p 387) He emigrated on 29 Nov 1741 and arrived in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania aboard ship Lydia.13,16 Moritz's first child, Bernhard, is born in Steinstal, the others are born in Postorff. Both of these villages are near the village of Hirschland, which was the parish center for all the surrounding villages at this time. The third born child is presumed to be named Jacob after his sponsoring relative Joh Jacob Klein. Similarly, the unnamed twins are presumed to be Adam and Maria Barbara Klein, based on their baptismal sponsors' names. Bernhard Klein arrives in Philadelphia on 29 September 1741 on the ship Lydia.

Jacob [Klein] CLINE {1.3}18 was born before 8 Oct 1713.13 He was baptized on 8 Oct 1713.19 Sponsors: Joh Jacob Klein of Steinsal, Nickel Schmidt of Hirschland, Anna Maria Schmidt of Postorff Jacob Klein arrives with his father Moritz Klein on 15 September 1749 on the ship Phoenix. Neither Jacob nor Moritz appear in the Pennsylvania records.

Adam CLINE {1.5} was baptized on 20 Feb 1718/19 in Postorff, Alsace,13 sponsors: Adam Duremeyer of Schallback, Theobald Buchey, Anna Maria Buchey He was a twin of Maria Barbara but was an unnamed son in church records. They relate that he goes "to America."
While Adam Klein and Maria Barbara Klein are twin son and daughter of Moritz and immigrate per the church record notation, they not found on any ship list or in any Pennsylvania records.

Maria Barbara CLINE {1.6} was baptized 20 Feb 1718/19 in the Hirschland Church, Postorff, Alsace.13,20 She was listed as an unnamed dau in church records but it was stated in church records that "she goes America." She was a twin of Adam.

Anna Margaretha KLEIN was born on 10 May 1721 and died on 15 Oct 1728.21

Hans Michael [Klein] CLINE {1.8} was baptized on 27 May 1725 in the Hirschland Church, Postorff, Alsace, Germany,13,14,22,23 sponsors being Joh Mickel Schmid of Hirschland, Johannes Hundt of Postorff, Catharina Ganglof of Postorff, Utilia Bouis of Postorff. He was confirmed on 5 Apr 1739 in the Hirschland Church, Postorff, Alsace.24 Church record states he goes "to America." He emigrated on 20 Jul 1747 and arrived in Philadelphia, Pensylvania aboard unnamed ship on 20 October 1747.25 He died in 1792 in Cabarrus County, North Carolina.12,14 The church records state that Michael is a son of Moritz Klein and marries Catherine Schufert, daughter of George Schufert, on 17 June 1750 at Christ Church (Mertz Church) on Bieber Creek, in Rockland township, Berks county, Pennsylvania. Their first child, Christina Magdalena (b 13 Apr 1751), is baptized there [PA1, p 139, 185]. Mertz Church is probably the church of Michael's wife and her family, since neither Michael nor the rest of the Moritz Klein family appear in the records of Mertz Church.

Michael's will, dated 1 December 1784, names children George, Daniel, John, Christina, Medlina, Barbel, Mary Mateline, Anna Elizabeth, Anna Mary, and Anna Margaret. Also mentions a deceased daughter Catherine, who had married a Mr. Lewis. In Michael's wife's, Catherine's funeral, the account mentions they had fourteen children. Executors of his will were Bostina Lentz and Samuel Suther.

Johannes [Klein] CLINE {1.7} was born before 16 Nov 1727 in Postorff, Alsace.13 He was baptized on 16 Nov 1727 in the Hirschland Church, Postorff, Alsace.26 Sponsors were Johannes Flass (Plass ?), Johannes Metzger, Appellomia Gruh, Anna Margretha Schmid. Johannes was confirmed in Apr 1745 in the Hirschland Church. The church record states he goes "to America" "ist auch abgereist." Johannes Klein is perhaps the one who arrives on either 25 Oct 1748 or 2 September 1749. He is on the Longswamp township, Berks county tax list in 1752 and 1754 as a single man and in 1762 and 1764-1765 as a married man. Johannes may be the one who, as a widower, marries a widow Mary Margaret Petsch on 28 April 1765 in Reading (PA26). Johannes has a daughter Louisa baptized on 11 June 1769 at Longswamp Reformed Church (PA9).

Anna Christina CLINE {1.9} was baptized 11 Sep 1729.13, 27 with sponsors, Anna Christina Schmid of Hirschland, Anna Magdalena Bauer and Joh Theobald Schmid. Anna Christina Klein has no immigration notation in the church record. However, it is believed that she came to America with her father in 1749 at the age of 19. She is a sponsor for the baptism of her brother Michael's first-born child, Christina Magdalena Klein, on 13 April 1751 at Mertz Church. Anna Christina's name was misread as Christian Klein by the translator of the Mertz Church records (PA1, p 139).
