McRae's Battalion, Miscellaneous

The following list of men was compiled from primary records which record the, unit as McRae's Battalion N. C. Cavalry. In some cases, the company designation is not given, and in other instances the company designation given is for a lettered company that did not exist as a part of this battalion. As the names do not appear on any of the surviving muster rolls of any company in the battalion, they have been checked for possible misspelling or incorrect unit designation. Some men appear on records created in areas where the battalion did not serve. It is possible the individual either gave an assumed name or purposely gave an incorrect unit designation. This is particularly true with the prisoner of war records. Since it is not possible to identify them with any company, they are recorded separately. Where a company designation is given on the original record it is noted.
