BRANCH, GEORGE W., Private. Born in Burke County and was by occupation a farmer prior to enlisting in Burke County at age 39, April 22, 1862, for the war. Died at Camp Mangum, near Raleigh, June 28, 1862. Cause of death not reported. [NCT V13:260]

CHESTER, GEORGE W. , Private. Born in Burke County where he resided as a farmer prior to enlisting in Burke County at age 22, October 15, 1861. Died in hospital at Raleigh on January 5, 1862, of "pneumonia." [NCT V9:452]

LYERLY, MARTIN, Private. Born in Rowan County and resided in Burke County where he was by occupation a farmer or tanner prior to enlisting in Rowan County at age 32, March 19, 1862. Died in hospital at Raleigh on May 11, 1862, of disease. [NCT V11:154]

PATTON, GEORGE, Private. Resided in Burke County and enlisted in McDowell County at age 15, on February 1, 1982 for the war. Present or accounted for until he died at Camp Mangum, near Raleigh, April 8, 1862, of "typhoid fever." [NCT V5:28]

PATTON, JOHN, Private. Resided in Burke County and enlisted in McDowell County at age 18, on February 1, 1982, for the war. Present or accounted for until he died at Camp Mangum, near Raleigh, April 9, 1862, of "typhoid fever." [NCT V5:28]

PIERCY, HOZEA, Private. Born in Burke County and was by occupation a farmer prior to enlisting in Burke County at age 26, April 15, 1862. Died at Camp Mangum, near Raleigh, June 4, 1862. Cause of death not reported. [NCT V13:267]

(1) Alexander Barton WHISENHUNT - 11 NC Inf, Co D

WHISENHUNT, ALEXANDER BARTON, Private. Resided in Burke County where he enlisted at age 22, February 15, 1862 for the war. Present or accounted for until he died at Raleigh, on April 14, 1862, of "pneumonia." [NCT V5:48]

WHISENHUNT, JAMES, Private. Resided in Burke County where he enlisted at age 18, February 15, 1862 for the war. Present or accounted for until he died in hospital at Camp Mangum, near Raleigh, April 22, 1862, of disease. [NCT V5:48]

(1) Stanhope WHISENHUNT - 11 NC Inf, Co D

WHISENHUNT, STANHOPE, Private. Resided in Burke County where he enlisted at age 32, February 12, 1862 for the war. Present or accounted for until he died at Camp Mangum, near Raleigh, April 18, 1862, of disease. [NCT V5:48]

(1) Wilburn WHISENHUNT - 11 NC Inf, Co D

WHISENHUNT, WILBURN, Private. Resided in Burke County where he enlisted at age 26, February 12, 1862 for the war. Present or accounted for until he died in hospital at Raleigh on or about June 6, 1863, of "anemia." [NCT V5:48]

(1) John Ambrose WILLIAMS - 11 NC Inf, Co B

WILLIAMS, JOHN AMBROSE, Private. Resided in Burke County where he enlisted at age 26, February 1, 1862 for the war. Present or accounted for until he died in hospital at Raleigh, on April 20, 1862, of "pneumonia." [NCT V5:32]

 

Brought back from Arlington Cem. along with 106 other soldiers and is buried in a mass grave with his name on a large memorial for the 107.

(2) Richard A. CHAPMAN - 6 NC Inf, Co A

CHAPMAN, Richard, Private. Resided in Burke County and enlisted on October 28, 1864, for the war. Captured at Burkeville, Virginia, April 6, 1865, and was admitted to hospital at Washington, D.C. with a gunshot wound to the right hip. Died April 12, 1865, of "pyacmia." [NCT V4:273]

 

Burke boys burial in Oakwood Cemetery, Raleigh. They all now have their government headstone.

(2) Calvin HAYS - 58 NC Inf, Co F

HAYES, CALVIN, _____. Place and date of enlistment not reported. Died at or near Raleigh on March 28, 1865. Cause of death not reported. [NCT V14:350]

(2) Merrit B. PENDLEY - 6 NC Inf, Co E

PENDLEY, MERRIT B., 1st Sergeant. Born in Burke County where he resided as a farmer prior to enlisting at age 31, June 15, 1861, for the war. Mustered in as Private and appointed Corporal on September 30, 1861. Promoted to Sergeant on June 17, 1862, and promoted to 1st Sergeant on February 1, 1863. Present or accounted for until wounded in the thigh and captured at Gettysburg, Pennsylvania, July 1, 1863. Died in hospital at Gettysburg on September 18, 1863, of wounds. [NCT V4:326-327]

(2) William WHISENHUNT - 3 NC Jr. Res, Co G - [No record in NCT]

(2) Arnel WALKINS - 60 NC Inf, Co K

WALKINS, ARNEL, Private. Enlisted in Burke County on October 6, 1863, for the war. Deserted on November 1, 1863. Died in hospital at Raleigh on January 10, 1864, of "pneumonia." [NCT V14:590]

(4) Newton A. BRANCH - 6 NC Inf, Co D

BRANCH, NEWTON A., Private. Born in Burke County where he resided as a mechanic prior to enlisting in Mecklenburg County at age 23, May 28, 1861, for the war. Mustered in as Private and promoted to Corporal on September 1, 1862. Wounded in the foot at Gettysburg, Pennsylvania July, 1863, and captured in hospital at Gettysburg. Hospitalized at Davids Island, New York Harbor, until paroled and transferred to City Point, Virginia, where he was received on September 27, 1863, for exchange. Reported absent wounded through December, 1864, and was reduced in ranks by reason of disability. Retired to the Invalid Corps on February 3, 1865. Took the Oath of Allegiance at Raleigh on June 3, 1865. [NCT V4:307-308]

(4) Samuel M. HOWARD - 6 NC Cav, Co K -

HOWARD, S.M., Private [No record in NCT, except for: "Enlisted October 1, 1864, for the war." [NCT V2:511]

(4) Jacob S. KINCADE - 1 NC Inf, Co G

KINCAID, J.S., Private. Enlisted in Burke County at age 27, April 25, 1861, for six months. Discharged September 21, 1861 [NCT V3:38]

(4) William D. POWELL - 1 NC Inf, Co G

POWELL, William, Private. Enlisted in Burke County at age 22, April 25, 1861, for six months. Present or accounted for until mustered out September 12-13, 1861 [NCT V3:39]

(4) Calvin TAYLOR - 16 NC Inf, Co E

TAYLOR, CALVIN, Private. Resided in Burke County where he enlisted at age 29, May 10, 1861. Present or accounted for until wounded in an unspecified action on February 8, 1863. Returned to duty prior to September 1, 1863. Present or accounted for until wounded in the chest at the North Anna River, Virginia, May 23, 1864. Returned to duty in September-October, 1864, and was present or accounted for until captured at or near Petersburg, Virginia, April 2, 1865. Confined at Point Lookout, Maryland, until released on June 21, 1865, after taking the Oath of Allegiance. [NCT V6:56]
