and the

Burke County Genealogical Society

Tuesday November 18,2014 at 6:30 pm

Morganton Community House
120 N King Street - Morganton, NC 28655

The Speaker will be

 Ann Robbins Phillips, author of
"Making Family Stories Come Alive"

Ann Robbins Phillips is a Tennessee author who will show us how to make our family histories come alive. Her series of books of historical fiction -Revenge, Bad Blood, and Sorrow -are biographical sketches with factual and fictional accounts of her family. She wrote them based on her research in the mountains of North Carolina where her family lived for over one hundred years. She moves her books through the early years of the Hooper and Watson family that settled in Jackson County, NC, then to the places circumstances carried them--Cocke County, TN; Clifton, SC; and Morganton, NC. Her final book in the series is set in middle Tennessee where her family settled, and where she was born.

She says that writing has always been a part of her life, from making brochures for church or her family's varied businesses, to just making elaborate "lists" to organize their lives. Her love of genealogy spurred her interest in writing historical novels. As she researched her family, she found many colorful relatives on which she has loosely based her books.

Ms. Phillips is a member of the Chattanooga Writers Guild, Knoxville Writers Guild, Tennessee Mountain Writers, Alabama Writers, and the North Carolina Writers Network.

She and her minister husband, Sam Phillips, have 5 children and 15 grandchildren. Her parents, Myron and Lida Hooper Robbins, were born in Rutherford County, NC. Her grandparents, Henry Hooper and Eliza Melinda Mills Hooper, moved to Morganton after the flood of 1903 in Spartanburg County, SC.
Ms. Phillips will be signing her books after the meeting. For more on the speaker and her books, go to her web page.
