Augustus "Gus" Hocut


This picture was in a collection of photos owned by Harriet "Hattie" Catherine Tatum McBride (1894-1965) of Ammon. Written on the back of the photograph was Gus Hocut. I have no idea of his realtion to the family if any. If anyone can tell me about Gus Hocut, please write.

Update: Bill Hocut identified him as Augustus Hocut born 2 May, 1852 in Johnston County, NC.  Augustus married Clarissa Noble Alexander.

In 1870, Augustus Hocutt is age 18 and living in Holden Township, New Hanover County. He is living with parents Lemuel and Lucy Hocutt.

In 1880, Augustus Hocutt is a farmer in Rocky Point Township, Pender County. He is married to wife Clarissa, born 1849, and he has chilren Alexander, born 1876, and Henry, born 1878.

In 1900, Augustus Hocut is a boarder in the home of Israel Washington Bordeaux in Elizabethtown Township, Bladen County. He has a wife of 1 year named Teretha, born May 1879. Augustus died prior to the 1910 census.

Augustus was the first postmaster of the Hocut post office in Bladen County from 30 June, 1888 to 18 July, 1897. Subsequent postmasters were Onslow McKay and Addie E. Cain until the post office was discontinued on 30 April, 1910.
