Benjamin Robeson Devane Sr. (4 February, 1783 - 1858)

This is a copy of a daguerreotype picture of Benjamin Robeson Devane, Sr.  
The inscription written in the bottom of the storage box attached to the glass picture is as follows:

Father of Francis D., 
Mary, Benj Jr., Bryant
Half-brother to John C. Devane

Benjamin R. Devane, Sr. married Ann Davis, daughter of Francis & Tabitha Davis of Bladen Co., NC.  
Ann Davis was born about 1785-90 in Bladen Co., NC and died in Bladen between 1840-50 (census).  
Benj. & Ann Devane were the parents of:

Benjamin Robeson Devane, Jr. (22 April, 1828 - 11 October, 1897)
     m. Elizabeth Ann Cain
Bryant Devane (1830 - )
Mary C. Devane (1833 - )
     m. Michael Cotter
Francis Davis Devane (1835 - ); changed name to Franklin
     m. Sarah "Sallie" Elizabeth Young

Benjamin & Ann Davis Devane's exact marriage date is unknown, but probably about 1821 (See deed book 11, page 193, Bladen Co. court records).  Benjmain R. served in The War of 1812 under Capt. G.W. Bannerman Co. - militia in Wilmington, New Hanover Co., NC.  Benjamin R. Devane is recorded in 1850 Bladen Co., NC census and died there in 1858.  His grave is marked with a tombstone noting his military service (see The Bladen Journal Newspaper, September 21, 1978, Elizabethtown, NC 28337 for further details and pictures).  

Benjmain R. Devane, Sr. was a son of James Devane, Sr. and his first wife, Ann Robeson, all residents of New Hanover Co., NC where Benjamin R. was born along with his brother James, Jr. and sister, Saleath.  After Ann Robeson Devane's death, James married Margaret Canty.  They were the parents of John Canty Devane.
