MAPS OF BERTIE COUNTY

Albemarle 1663-1668

Carolina was originally a proprietary province. Established in 1663, Albemarle encompassed the newly formed Lord's Propietors' province of Carolina. The land under a royal charter from King Charles all belonged to eight Lord Proprietors and they also made up the government. The settlers who came here were chiefly from Virginia and for the most part of English descent.

The three precincts bore the names of three Lord Proprietors: Sir Carteret; Sir Berkley; Lord Shaftesbury.

Carteret Precinct was divided into Currituck and Pasquotank, and the three original precincts now became four. Now the "proprietor" names were changed to those of the principal streams. About 1738 these precincts became known as counties.

Settlement continued to be limited to the major waterways. Your "Bertie County ancestors" at this time was only settled along the Chowan River and deeds would indicate that they lived in Chowan Precinct.

Be sure to check Chowan County Archives for early documents. Your Bertie ancestors might have been in this area by that time! Visit the Chowan County Page and place a query for the early ancestors.
