Baker, Solomon Private in the company led by Captain George Gibbs in the regiment commanded by Colonel Thomas Benton (December 1812 to April 1813) and then served a tour of duty in the company of Captain John Anderson in the regiment of Colonel William Pillow (October 1813 to December 1813).

This was actually the same unit -- the 2nd Regiment of Tennessee Volunteers. Benton's regiment participated in the so-called Natchez Expedition in early 1813, disbanded in April of that year and reformed in October to fight in the Creek War. Baker was a private and, as such, would have been paid $8.00 per month. Although I could not find a bounty record for Baker, it should be kept in mind that bounty warrants were not issued to War of 1812 volunteers and militia until 1852. However, I did locate in our index to War of 1812 pension applications an entry for the widow of Solomon Baker, Esther, applying for a pension (pensions were given beginning in 1871). jomaynard

Hogg, Gavin
Gavin Hogg was born in Orange Co but moved to Bertie to begin his law practice around 1810. Politically, he ws a Federalist, and strongly opposed the War of 1812 and expressed his views with vigor. According to Pulaski Cowper, "publick sentiment was fiercely arrayed against him,and so excited and defiant had it become, that his life was threatened and he defied, singley and alone a mob in the streets of Windsor and stationed on his front porch wih gin in hand, threatened death to the first who should invade his domain" But despite his opposition to the war, the patriotic Hogg raised a company of soldiers in Bertie Co joining his good friend, Capt James Iredell. As their lieutenant,(1st Reg NC Militia) Hogg participated in the Battle of Creney island near Norfolk, VA. After his return from the war, he enjoyed great popularity among the very people who had wanted to lynch him and his legal services were eagerly sought. "The War of 1812, The Battle at Plattsburg, and the Charles W. Jacocks Papers: 1819-1846"

The "Charles W. Jacocks Papers: 1819-1846" is an outstanding collection of letters and other documents from family, friends, and clients of Charles West Jacocks of Bertie Co NC. They are in the Private Manuscript Collection, NC Archives, Raleigh, NC, Call Number: PC 253.1 & 253.2.

This collection is very rich in family lore and information. The Jacocks were prominent and politically active. Their kin lived in Bertie and Perquimans counties, NC, as well as in New Haven CT and New York City. Some of Charles Jacocks' kin settled in TN during the early 1800's, and some of the young attended various boarding schools and colleges. They wrote Charles about their experiences.

There is also information about the Legislature in Raleigh and about Andrew Jackson's administration. One of the Jacocks described shaking President Jackson's hand at the White House, but the Jacocks did not approve of Jackson's policies.

However, an 1835 letter from Jonathan H. Jacocks, Hertford, Perquimans Co NC, to his younger brother, Charles West Jacocks is of historical interest to students of the War of 1812. The letter concerns Jonathan Jacocks' search for information about 33 North Carolinians who may have served under Captain Copeland during the War of 1812. Capt. Bryant, Capt. Copeland, and Capt. Gee are named in the letter as Company Commanders during the War of 1812. Jacocks informant was Everard Garrett, and Jacocks described Garrett as having served in Capt. Copeland's Company attached to the 10th Regiment.

Most of the Detached Militia of North Carolina were attached to the 10th Regiment. However, Capt. Copeland and many of the others named in Jacocks' letter were not enumerated in the "Muster Rolls of the Soldiers of the War of 1812 Detached from the Militia of North Carolina in 1812 and 1814."

These "Muster Rolls" were published under the direction of the Adjutant General in 1852 and reprinted in 1926 by Barber Printing Co., Inc., Winston-Salem NC. In 1976, Genealogical Publishing Co., Inc. Baltimore, reprinted them from the 1926 Edition with an "Added Index."

The "Muster Rolls" may be incomplete and in error because they do not agree with statements made in Jacocks' letter. If Capt. Copeland did in fact command a Company attached to the 10th Regiment, as Jacocks and Garrett claim, he should be listed in the "Muster Rolls."

Moreover, Jacocks' letter stated that Capt. Copeland died an "early death" at Plattsburg and that Everard Garrett was in Copeland's Company. Plattsburg was the headquarters of the U.S. Army on the northern frontier during the War of 1812. Located in Clinton Co NY, Plattsburg was the scene of an important U.S. victory on Lake Champlain that possibly saved New York from British invasion via the Hudson Valley. The battle took place during September 1814.

Everard Garrett was listed in the "Muster Rolls" (p. 7) as a Lieutenant in the Eight Company, detached from the Hertford Regiment of the Militia of North Carolina by virtue of an Act passed in Congress, April 10, 1812. However, Capt. Irwin Jenkins, and not Capt. Copeland, was listed as being in command of the Company in which Garrett served.

Capt. Copeland is not mentioned in the "Muster Rolls," but no further research has been done to find out why he was not listed.

The "Muster Rolls" (p. 65) do show that Capt. Joseph C. Bryant was in command of the Third Company (Artillery) detached from the Bertie Regiment of the Militia of North Carolina pursuant to the April 10, 1812, Act of Congress.

The "Muster Rolls" (p. 77) also show that Jonathan H. Jacocks was Captain of a Company of Bertie County men of the First Regiment of the Detached Militia, Organized in August 1814.

The following is an exact transcription of the February 24, 1835 letter from Jon. H. Jacocks:

"My Dear Brother, "This makes the third time I shall have addressed a letter to you this week, but this time I take the liberty of troubling you with my business alone. "Yesterday I went into the upper end of Chowan County to see a man by the name of Everard Garrett, formerly of Bertie and one of the Company of Captain Copeland attached to the 10th [?] Regiment of Infantry in the last War. Capt. C. [Copeland] died near Platsburg (sic) and in consequence of his early death, and the irregular manner in which he had made his return to the War Department, and the consequent loss of his papers, that Department has brought his estate in debt $119-when, if the 33 recruits which have not been allowed him, about $700 should be due. Here are the rejected recruits (ie) [Note: In Jonathan H. Jacocks' letter these names are listed in paragraph form and the name of each man that he thought was from Bertie Co NC is underlined. Someone later wrote notations in lead pencil beside a few of the men's names. The notations seem to indicate where the men were living when the notes were added in pencil. These notes are enclosed in (parenthesis).] [Note: Because RootsWeb does not support underlining, the men underlined in the original have been bracketed with *.] *John M. Brickell* (Hertford) *Jos. Hoggard* *Saml. Rogers* (Martin) *Rian Cole* [Maybe Cale] *Josiah Brantly* *John Hendrixson* *Elias Hawkins* *Jasper Buck* (Beaver Town, Illinois) *Williamson Lawrence* *Wm Francis* *James F. James* Jos. Selvy *Thomas Allen* Zadoc Haste (Hertford) Elisha Harvill Henry Morris Isaac Wilson Harry White Benj. Madlin (Martin) [It may be Elisha Harvill to which "Martin" applied.] John Sylvester Asa Powell (Poor House) Geo. Meredith Isaac Robbins Nath'l Holloman *Wm Wilkinson* *Timothy Outlaw* Wm Brickhouse Corbin Jones Thomas Jones Thomas Hassell or Hapell (Jacocks uses "ps" for double s's and the same form also looks like his "p".) Chas. Lowe Francis Alexander, and Peter Vannhall "Those underscored are Bertie names, and I did believe until yesterday were all dead. But Mr. Garrett informed me that Jasper Buck is still living in your neighborhood. [Note: Jasper Buck apparently went to IL at some point.] "My object in writing you now is to beg the favor of you to see Mr. Buck or any other of the persons named if living and get them to go before some Majistrate (sic) of the County and state what they know about these recruits, wheather (sic) Capt C. enlisted them or not and if he paid them their Bounties and Premiums. Get the Clerk's seal to the papers with his certificate that the Justice is an acting Majistrate, etc. etc. and inclose (sic) the same to me as soon as possible, as I am anxious to send in my papers as soon as possible, to be acted on by the present Congress. "Capt. Bryant recruited in Bertie and it may be that Capt C. and him swapped men, if so get Mr. Buck to state the names of those given up by Capt C. to Capt. B. and them by Capt. B. to Capt. C. and how the swap or exchange came to be made. "Your early attention to this will much oblige Dear Brother, yours Affectionately "Jon. H. Jacocks "C. W. Jacocks Esq.} "Recollect that I have no information from any of you since the 2nd Instant and the anxiety I must naturally feel." Note: In another hand, the following remarks were written in lead pencil at the end of the letter: "Asa Powell is liable to fits and does not recollect distinctly, but says he and several others enlisted under Capt Gee [Bryant is written and crossed out] and did not serve under Capt Copeland." [The name could be Capt. See but it looks more like Gee.]

The letter was posted from Hertford, NC, to Charles W. Jacocks, Esquire, Spring Branch near Windsor, NC, 24 Feb 1835.
