SMITH

Ellen Williams June 21, 2004

I am seeking the identity of Jarvis SMITH (page 448 in Beaufort Co 1790 census living by himself).  Parents, wife, county of origin, etc. I am also seeking the identity of Jarvis WEST who in 1754 was listed next to Foster JARVIS, Jr. in a Hyde Tithable List and in 1755 Foster JARVIS, Jr. and Roger MASON, Esqr. were ordered  to take WEST's estate into their possession and divide it between his widow and creditors.  Who were his parents, wife, and county of origin, etc.?

SPAIN

John M. Spain February 15, 1997

Looking for information on origins of Augustine SPAIN (aka Austin / Augustis) probably born prior to 1757, and relatives (?) Drury, Thomas and William SPAIN who owned property on N. side of Tar River at Marks Swamp 1778. Augustine later lived in Hyde and Beaufort (Pamlico-Lowlands) Counties. Augustine also served in Revolutionary War - received land grant in Sumner County, TN, but later sold.

SQUYARS / SQUIRES

Sharon Davis March 2, 1997

Searching for the origins of Jonas SQUYARS / SQUIRES. He was first found in the Hyde County deeds during the early 1700's. His deed was between he and William CAMPBELL. It appears Jonas SQUYARS traded land with CAMPBELL for land in Beaufort County. The only other SQUYARS / SQUIRES in Hyde County were the Mattamuskeet Indian. It is thought that Jonas may have been part of this tribe. I would love to hear from anyone researching this family or anyone with knowledge of this Indian Tribe. I am searching for who "D. Squires" was. He or perhaps SHE was found in a deed dated 1765 in Beaufort County as a witness in a deed between Appleton Squires and his "only" brother see below: Also to note this land was originally in Hyde County if you see the deed between Jonas and William Campbell.

Beaufort Deed Book 4 dated 5 August 1765 Know all men by these presents that I Appleton Squires of Beaufort County & province of North Carolina planter for & in consideration of the love & affection I have & do bear unto my only brother Eyaberton Squires of the sd County & province have given granted aliened & _____& confirmed & by these presents do freely & absolutely give grant convey & confirm unto said Eyaberton Squires his heirs & asignes forever a parcel of land in the County afsd on the N. Side of Pamptico River & E side of the Bevear dam beginning at the head of the flat branch of Martins Cart road over the bride running N. 70 E to the back line of my land & with the sd line westerly to Martins Cart road & with said road to the bridge & to the beginning containing 40 acres more or less as by deed to my father form William Campbell dated the 7th day of Feb 1750. To have & to hald the sd parcel of land containing forty acres & all houses woods waters & app____? thereto belonging unto the sd Eyaberton Squires his heirs & assigns fover & I Appleton Squires for my slf & my heirs to the said land & premises unto sd Eyaberton & his heirs & assigns shall & will warrant & defend Witness my had & seal 5th of August 1765 Appleton Squires Sealed and delivered in presende of T or J Boyd, H. Wollard, D. Squires

Please note that I believe the brother mentioned in the deed as "Eyaberton" was actually Elventon. Also I later find him in Edgefield County, South Carolina where he had a wife and some children. I am sure there are more Squires/Squyars descendants out there just with a different spelling of the name.

SWINDELL / SWINDLE / HARRIS / DAVIS

Bettie Dall December 13, 1997

My great-grandfather was Isaac SWINDLE who was a mariner, born abt. 1831, possible Hyde or Beaufort County. In 1860 Census was a sailor in Washington, Beaufort Co., NC. He married Matilda HARRIS the daughter of Will HARRIS and Margaret DAVIS. In the 1870 Census they were in New Bern, Craven Co. and listed as a mariner with my grandmother. They had a daughter Ida age 2. In 1880 wife was a widow. I found an Isaac SWINDELL married to a Frances KELLY in 1850. Jonathan SWINDELL listed an Isaac SWINDELL as a son. I can't find any connections. Appreciate any help in solving this problem.
