Beaufort County (Black) Sailors
Who Served

United States Steamer Harriett Lane
(from Official Records of the Union and Confederate Navies)

in the
United States Navy

The current sailors' list is the product of a team of researchers from the Naval Historical Center, the National Park Service, and Howard University who examined hundreds of thousands of pages of naval records housed at the National Archives in Washington, D.C. for evidence about the black sailors of the Civil War. Of the thousands of sailors, I found 933 from North Carolina, however some gave no state or county as a place of birth. Among the 933, I found at least 41 from Beaufort County. The National Parks Service and their allied researchers are now on white Sailors in the U.S. and Confederate Navies.
