To the Honorable General Assembly of the State of North Carolina,
Greeting.
We the undersigned Citizens of Hyde County resident upon the Western Side of Pongo River, labouring under much distress and many disadvantages, arising from our connection with said County, humbly pray your Honorable body will take our Case into your Serious Consideration, and grant to us that releif that in your wisdom may seem proper. Pongo River, which devides us from the rest of the County being from Three to Five Miles wide, in the greatest part of its distance and extending in length nearly Thirty Miles, laying open to Pamptico Sound, being easily agitated by the Wind and rendered extremely dangerious to pass without great risque of life and property, and many of our Citizens has met with the loss of both by their temerity in attempting to pass it when the Winds were high; But such is out situation that we are Compelled to attempt it at times extremely dangerious to attend our Courts (which Are Situated upon the Eastern Side of Said River) as Witnesses, Jurors, and nearly upon all other public duties, or be Subjected to heavy Fines and Forfeitures.
We threfore pray your Honorable Body will grant us that releif that
our Situation admits of by attaching that part of Hyde County Westward
of Pongo River to the County of Beaufort, that we may not labour under
greater disadvantages then our fellow Citizens in general;
For which your Petitioners will ever pray, &C---
