In this 1764 List of Taxables for Beaufort County, researchers are reminded that white males (males only) became taxables at age 16. Free blacks, mulattoes and slaves became taxables at age 12, both male and female. While some free blacks and mulattoes are identified, one would have to assume that other heads of house also fall within that category as family members are listed solely under the headings of "black" and "total". This tax list was published in hopes that it helps researchers of early Beaufort County.

The above is the 1764 list of taxables for Beaufort County was transcribed by John H. Oden III and proofread by Louise Miller Cowell. This list of taxables was published in the Pamteco Tracings, the journal of the Beaufort County Genealogical Society.
