Generation 1

1. Alonzo Duncan Dunlap born in Ansonville, 03-25-1885; died Ansonville, at home 03-14-1960.

Alonzo was called "L.D." by his wife Flonnie, who he married on July 15, 1910, just 5 days after her father Henry Ingram died. They were married by Rev. Sandy Richardson at his house in Cedar Hill. The witnesses were: Jesse Armstrong, Fletcher Allen, and J.D. Dunlap. When Flonnie died in 1988, we found old paid bills addressed to L.D. Dunlap. At first it was believed he was the only child of William and Jamima, but it has been discovered that there was another son named William (this family wore name William out!!) that was older and died in 1928. The parents were listed as William and Jamima Gaddy. Alonzo was raised in the house with his father William and his 3rd wife Glovina; and his twelve (12) half sisters and brothers. Alonzo, Paul Carpenter, and Erie Gaddy were 1st cousins. Alonzo died at home in Ansonville on March 14, 1960 at 8:30am of Cerebal Arterio Sclerosis (associated with old age). We were pulled out of school the day before he died and taken to the house to see him one last time as he lay dying (he was in a coma).

There are six known children of Alonzo Duncan Dunlap:

i. Marvin Dunlap born in Ansonville, 07-03-1916; place of death; Pittsburg, Pa.

Marvin was Alonzo and Flonnie's 1st born. He had the urge to travel early and left home going to Florida to find work. He apparently would write from different places before he settled in Pittsburg, Pa where he got married and subsequently died. A few family members drove out to the funeral. The car broke down on the way but they managed to get there and back. Monrovia was his beneficiary. He and his wife had separated when he died, they did not have any children together. He had worked in the Stell Mills. I can't really recall what he looked like, other than the pictures I have seen. In the picture he and Jemima looked a lot alike. Jemima, Teen, Mamie, Temp, and John, I think, drove out to the funeral. Fine did not go.

ii. Earl Dunlap born in Ansonville, 02-23-1917; died Autumn Care Nursing Home 12-29-1988;

Earl was Alonzo and Flonnie's 5th child. Earl never got married. He stayed at home with his mother all his life until Fine got sick and died in 1988. He was always very quiet, you could not get him to talk unless he had a drink. After he had a few you could not get him to shut up. He would sing, dance and even try to tell jokes. He stuttered and talked real fast, at times it was hard to understand what he was trying to say. I can't remember if he ever had a regular job. He was severely beaten up by John Kirby one night and was never the same again. He was left almost retarded, but he always remembered people. He rarely left the house after the beating. Fine took care of him like a child until she died at 100 years of age.

iii. Willie Mae Dunlap born in Ansonville, 11-20-1919; died Wadesboro Hospital 09-15-1981;

Mae was Alonzo and Flonnie's 3rd child. She also never married. She left home early and moved to Thomasville. She and her companion, L.D. came down on weekends. They would get drunk and fight a lot. She stayed away until L.D. died, then she came back home to Ansonville to live with her mother. Mae was well into her fifties by then, she died in 1981. I was living in Dallas, Texas at the time. Mae always had a smart mouth and was always getting into an argument with someone, whether she was drunk or sober. She was a small lady, her hair was long when she was younger, and she looked a lot like her father. She was not a bad looking woman. Her favorite saying was "I am Lonzo Dunlap's black child."

Mima was Alonzo and Flonnie's 4th child. Her 1st marriage was to Nathan Davis from Cedar Hill. They had 5 children together; Margretta, Nathaniel, John, Monrovia and Mamie. Buddy was born before Mima married, his father was Bill Wall. She later married King Edwards after her children were almost grown. She lived for a long time in New York. When she moved back to North Carolina, she spent a lot of time in Albemarle and New London. She never lived in Ansonville again. Her parents mostly raised her children, they had them since they were real small. Mima had a series of strokes over the years but she could always talk and get around until the very end when she could not walk any longer. She died in November of 1999 right before Thanksgiving.

4 Willie Alonzo Dunlap born in Ansonville, 02-23-1926; died Cedar Hill, at home 09-17-1987

Will, as he was called, was the last child born to Alonzo and Flonnie Dunlap. He married Eva Mae Crump (Tab) in 1947. Will was quite handsome as a young man. Will and Tab had five children: James, Armatine, Joyce, Alonzo, and Jackie. Will was slight in build, a quite sort of person until he had his first drink, then he became a different person. He would sing, dance, and become the life of the party. Tab's mother, Armatine Crump, did not like him, she did not want her Tab to marry him. Before he got sick he could be seen at the local "juke joints" swinging young ladies with his finger pointed to the floor. His nickname was "Stu". Where he got that name from I don't know. He had a tendency to stutter. He looked a lot like his mother, who was called Fine by her children and all her grandchildren. He was not handy around the house, he was not known for fixing things. He was never the one to discipline his children when they were small because he could not stand the crying, so we did not get many whippings from him. Mother dear did not mind taking up the slack! Will's favorite song was "Lean On Me" by Bill Withers. He would play it over and over until everyone around him was ready to pull out their hair. He wore that song out. I thought it was a good song in the beginning, but he made me not like it anymore.

16 Alonzo Dunlap born in Ansonville, 12-08-1950; died in Burnsville, Dau's house 04-01-1999

Lonzie was born to Will and Tab on December2, 1950. They did not file his birth until December 8th, so his birth certificate was issued with the wrong date. He celebrated both days. He married Cynthia Leak from Wadesboro. They had one child, Angel Michele. Lonzie was called "Moonk" when he was a child. He called himself "Dad". He joined the USMC and served in the Vietnam War. He was honorably discharged after being wounded in the chest. He received the Purple Heart. After he separated from his wife, he moved around a lot, living in Atlanta, Charlotte, and Gastonia. Lonzie could always find a job; hospitals loved him because he was such a good orderly. He moved back home from Gastonia less than a year before he died. He had a massive heart attack and died on April 1, 1999 hours after being released from the Albemarle hospital. I miss him!!
